Motorcycle helmet protective safety

RACV has become a partner in the MotoCAP program that will provide motorcycle riders and scooter riders with independent advice about the safety of motorcycle clothing. The program complements RACV’s funding for ANCAP and UCSR that star rate the crash worthiness of new and used cars.

Wearing protective clothing can reduce the likelihood of riders being seriously injured or hospitalised in the event of a crash. Riders involved in a crash are at risk of both impact and abrasion injuries, well designed protective gear can help to prevent or reduce the severity of these injuries.

Early in 2018, RACV’s market research of on-road riders in Victoria found 81% of riders would be at least moderately influenced by a safety rating system for clothing.

For scooter riders, while 99% wear a helmet all the time, 40% said they never wear motorcycle specific boots or shoes and 36% never wear protective pants.  25% wear thongs or open shoes at least some of the time.

Wearing of protective clothing is highest amongst motorcycle riders, but only 95% wear a helmet all the time.  Only 5% said they never wear protective footwear and 6% never wear protective pants, for example.

Overall, wearing of protective clothing was lower amongst male riders aged between 18 and 35 years, and also amongst scooter riders.

By participating in the program, RACV hopes to raise awareness of the range of protective clothing available to riders as well as lifting the overall safety and quality of rider apparel.
