2022-23 New Year’s Eve fireworks, events, and celebrations in Melbourne and regional Victoria

Another year has come and gone, and on December 31, the city of Melbourne will celebrate with fireworks, parties, and dozens of events across the city and suburbs. 

This year, organisers have promised that Melbourne will feature one its largest fireworks displays that has ever been produced in Victoria. There will also be designated ‘celebration zones’ across the city that will be family-friendly and offer a front-row seat to the fireworks displays.

If you are planning to head into the CBD for New Years, make sure to plan ahead with arevo, as tens of thousands of people are expected to be celebrating in the city. 

For those celebrating at home either quietly or throwing a party, there are plenty of ways to celebrate with summery cocktails and mocktails, to homemade sausage roll canapés and the ultimate in chocolate cakes.

Where to see New Year’s Eve fireworks in Melbourne and regional Victoria

Melbourne will once again host four celebration zones across the city. These zones provide great vantage points to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks, as well as offering live music and family-friendly entertainment, plus food trucks. 

Bookings are not required to attend any of the celebration zones.

  • Docklands

  • Treasury Gardens 

  • Kings Domain

You’ve two opportunities to see Melbourne’s New Year’s Eve fireworks, once at 9.30pm for families, and then again at midnight.  

The eight-minute midnight display is set to be huge, with fireworks (and lasers) launching from 30 rooftops and all set to a soundtrack by DJ Mike Katz (aka Harvey Sutherland). 

If you don’t want to head into the city, the fireworks will be visible from most locations with a clear view of the CBD Skyline. Ruckers Hill in Northcote, St Kilda Beach and Anderson Park in Hawthorn are all popular fireworks-watching locations thanks to their views of the city. 

Those staying in the regions won’t miss out on fireworks either, with displays planned in locations like Bendigo, Inverloch, Mildura, Geelong and many more.

Going out on top: New Year’s Eve 

See in 2023 from the sky with RACV City Club hosting its very festive Going Out On Top New Year’s Eve celebration from all the way up on level 17. The event features a four-course dinner, drinks and dancing, plus live music from Baker Boys Band. 

John Foreman's Aussie Pops Orchestra Gala Concert

Celebrate another year gone through music at this gala concert featuring Marina Prior, Mark Vincent and of course John Foreman and the 60-piece Aussie Pops Orchestra. They’ll be taking audiences through musical theatre greats a classic songs, including Brindisi (La Traviata), The Blue Danube and Music of the Night. There are two performances (matinee and evening) with a small number of Balcony Fireworks Party tickets available to evening guests who want to watch the fireworks afterwards. 

New Year’s Eve at Edinburgh Gardens

The leafy Edinburgh Gardens in Melbourne’s inner north is hosting a family friendly end-of-year celebration with a little bit of everything. It kicks off at 2pm with skateboarding demonstrations followed by live music (courtesy Le Fleur and Tripod) plus an open-air cinema screening Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Top End Wedding. Food trucks will be on site, too.

The Phantom of the Opera

For a very dramatic New Year’s Eve book into The Phantom of the Opera at Arts Centre Melbourne. The highly successful Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is holding a matinee and evening performance on December 31, with RACV Members even able to score discounted tickets. 

NYE at the Victory Room

The whole family is welcome to pop down to Marvel Stadium for a free, all ages party in the victory room and adjacent balcony. Expect pop-up bars, activations, entertainment and live music from DJ Lasiah and Sweet Mix Kids. No bookings are required either, just head on down and have a ball.

New Year’s Eve cruise

Fancy seeing the fireworks from on the water? Melbourne Cruises is running several NYE celebration cruises where you can do just that. There are several options available depending on whether you’d like to hit the dancefloor or focus on viewing the fireworks.

A Titanic New Year’s Eve

For a party that’s sure to be a splash, book into A Titanic New Year’s Eve at Healesville Country Club and Resort. You’ll meet the crew for drinks before tucking into a three-course dinner, drinks and enjoying entertainment before arriving (safely) ashore.

New Year’s Eve at Piano Bar Geelong

As we learnt in 2022, piano bars are having something of a comeback. See out the year surrounded by songs at Piano Bar Geelong where you’ll be treated to canapés and a night of live entertainment. Or splurge with the VIP tickets to get three cocktails thrown in as well. Piano Bar Geelong is also taking over The Pier for a separate NYE event with Piano Bar Ballarat and Bendigo also hosting New Year’s Eve parties.

Moyneyana Festival

If you find yourself in Port Fairy, check out the annual New Year’s Eve Procession held as part of the Moyneyana Festival – the tradition has been running for 75 years! The festival is all about creating good memories over the summer period, with the New Year’s Eve parade featuring all number of beautiful and wacky floats and decorated bicycles. 

Bright Brewery New Year’s Eve

Enjoy a festive end to the year in the high country at Bright Brewery. The award-winning brewery is hosting a NYE shindig on the banks of the Ovens River where you can listen to live music (from MIXTAPE and Hair Force One), boogie, and enjoy plenty of beers from the indoor and outdoor bars. Plenty of seating available, plus finger food (complimentary with your ticket) until 11pm. 

San Remo New Year’s Eve Cruise

Say ‘aloha’ to 2023 on Wildlife Coast Cruises’ Hawaiian-themed NYE cruise. Departing from San Remo, this four-hour cruise features a free drink on arrival plus complimentary appetizers, a licensed bar, live music and views of both the sunset and local fireworks from the water. If you’d rather stay on land, fireworks will be happening in the nearby Cowes and Coronet Bay.
