RACV had a five year $1 million partnership with Zoos Victoria supporting the Australian Wildlife Health Centre at Healesville Sanctuary - an interactive veterinary hospital, which ran from 2006 to 2010.
The partnership was based on a common interest - the care and protection of Victoria’s wildlife - and a commitment to driver education and safety, aiming to help promote protection of wildlife.
An important part of the partnership involved educating motorists on how to avoid collisions with wildlife and the steps to take to optimise passenger safety and safety for wildlife in such situations.
RACV wildlife connect
A key part of the partnership involved RACV Wildlife Connect a 24 hour a day telephone service for Victorians who hit or encounter injured wildlife on the road.
Motorists calling RACV’s 13 11 11 number were immediately connected with one of three Victorian-based volunteer wildlife groups who provided advice and help:
- Wildlife Victoria
- Help for Wildlife
- Wildlife Rescue and Information Network (WRIN).
Wildlife Connect was a partnership initiative between RACV and Zoos Victoria, in collaboration with non-profit volunteer wildlife groups. It formed an integral part of our partnership with Zoos Victoria.
The Wildlife Connect service could not exist without the support of these wildlife groups and the many trained volunteer wildlife carers around Victoria.
More than 4000 injured animals have been assisted through Wildlife Connect since its inception in February 2006.
If you hit an animal, call 13 11 11 and RACV will connect you to a wildlife carer network.
