overview of 2011

There were 287 people who died on Victorian roads in 2011. This is 8 percent fewer than the five year average figure from 2006 to 2010, and 1 less fatality than in 2010.

metropolitan and rural drivers

There were 129 people who died on Victoria’s metropolitan roads and 158 who died on Victoria’s rural roads in 2011. Only a third of Victorians (33 per cent) live in rural areas, but 55% of all fatalities on Victoria’s roads occurred in rural areas. 

The number of young drivers (18-25) killed on rural roads was 16, which was 7 less than 2010 (23).

There were 66 people aged 18-25 who died on Victorian roads in 2011. This is four less fatalities than in 2010.

Thirty-three of these young people killed on the roads were drivers. They make up 27 per cent of the total number of drivers killed on Victoria’s roads, but 18-25 year olds only represent 14 percent of licensed drivers.
