The Australian STAR Rating Scheme, owned by Australia’s Auto Clubs and managed by AAA Tourism, has been the traveller’s guide to selecting the right accommodation for over 50 years. It’s the only official accommodation certification scheme in Australia offering consistent ratings for approximately 10,000 properties nationwide.

star rating scheme categories
The Australian STAR Rating Scheme has ten accommodation categories:
- Apartment Hotel
- Backpackers
- Bed & Breakfast
- Guesthouse
- Hotel
- Houseboat
- Motel
- Resort
- Self Catering
- Tourist / Caravan Park
We recognise that places to stay come in all shapes, sizes and types; therefore it is important that STAR Ratings compare ‘apples with apples’.
Each Category has its own unique set of Standards. As you would expect, a 5 STAR Houseboat is the best of its Category, but offers a very different experience to a 5 STAR Hotel.
