racv website scrutinises transport promises

VICTORIA’S peak transport advocate, RACV, has launched a Federal election website dedicated to monitoring the election promises of both major political parties on transport issues.

RACV General Manager, Public Policy, Brian Negus said the RACV Election Monitor website detailed vital projects which RACV believes need funding commitments from the Federal election candidates to ease congestion, reduce the road toll and improve road safety.

These top 18 projects include: the East-West Link from the Eastern Freeway to CityLink (tunnel) to WestLink extended to Western Ring Rd;the East West Metro Rail Tunnel between Footscray Station and Caulfield Station ;the North-East Link between the Northern Ring Road in Greensborough and the Eastern Freeway/East Link; and a high speed Airport Rail Link between Southern Cross Station and Melbourne Airport.

“These projects are vital not only to our future economic growth, but also to the social well-being of the community, to jobs growth and our safety. Both Federal parties must do the right thing and commit to these essential and significant transport projects in Victoria,” Mr Negus said.

“This website will be recording the promises made by the political parties, whether they’ve committed funds to necessary transport projects and where they stand on issues that are important to all road and public transport users.

“When a policy is announced we will review that policy, determine if it is what Victorians need and scrutinise whether the funding commitment is there to get the job done.

“The Federal Government must deliver on Victoria’s key transport projects.”

The website lists transport policies from the Labor, Liberal, Greens and minor parties and has a “report card” outlining transport projects and whether these promises have been partially planned, ignored or committed to.

It lists previous polls conducted by RACV to gauge community reaction to transport issues and the website provides for feedback from visitors to list their priorities.

“We encourage all Victorians to visit the website, give us feedback on the projects we’ve listed as vital to Victoria’s future and to tell us what you think about what the parties are promising,” said Mr Negus.

When the Federal Election is concluded, the RACV Election Monitor will focus its attention on scrutinising the promises made by political candidates during the State Government election.
