Golf handicap

Sanctuary Lakes Golf Course

Golf handicap defined

An Australian Golf Handicap is a numerical figure, which is a reflection of an amateur golfer’s playing ability. Australian Golf Handicaps allow golfers of all physical golf abilities to be able to compete against one another and are calculated and allotted in accordance with the Australian Handicapping System as specified by Golf Australia. The maximum Australian Handicap permitted for men is 36 and for women is 45.  Further information on Australian golf handicapping  can be found by downloading a free copy of the Australian Handicapping & Course Rating Systems from the Golf Australia website.

What is Golf Link?

GOLF Link is an initiative of Golf Australia (GA) to centralise and computerise the Australian Golf Handicapping System, the Australian Course Rating System and other golf administration tasks.  The system calculates and maintains the handicaps of all affiliated golfers across Australia.  GOLF Link allows a uniform and consistent method of handicapping and provides the golfer with an identification card that is recognised at all affiliated clubs across Australia.

Australian Course rating (ACR)

There are two types of Australian Course Rating (ACR); an Australian Women‟s Course Rating (AWCR) which is the evaluation of the playing difficulty of a course for a player with an Australian Women‟s Handicap of zero, and an Australian Men‟s Course Rating (AMCR) which is the evaluation of the playing difficulty of a course for a player with an Australian Men‟s Handicap of zero.

How is an Australian golf handicap calculated?

After joining RACV Golf Membership, a player must submit scorecards to RACV from three rounds of golf accompanied by the golf handicap application form.   Upon receipt of the cards, each card is analysed and adjusted (if necessary) so that the worst score for any given hole is not more than 3 over par (eg. triple bogey) for a male and 4 over par for a female. Thus if a male player returned a score of 8 or more on a par 4 hole, the score is adjusted to a 7. It should be noted that this adjustment is only made to a player’s initial three cards. After the adjustments have been made, the difference between the amended score and the ACR of each card is ascertained (note: Gross Score – ACR = Handicap Differential). Once three scores have been returned, the resultant three handicap differentials are compared, with the two worst handicap differentials being disregarded.

A player having submitted three scorecards would be allocated an Australian Handicap as follows:

Round Adjusted score ACR or AWCR Differentials (ie. Adjusted score minis the CCR)
1 93 73 20
2 94 74 20
3 83 72 11
    Total 11 (best handicap differential)

In the above example, the player’s initial Australian Handicap would be 11 * .93. Exact handicap = 10.2

Maintaining your golf handicap - club competition

Almost all Victorian golf clubs are on the national handicapping system, GOLF Link.  The process starts when a golfer swipes their GOLF Link card (or enters their GOLF Link number on the keyboard) to enter a club competition. (Note: Some clubs without direct access to GOLF Link may simply request the GOLF Link number for processing later, this request may be on the competition entry sheet.) At the completion of the round the golfer submits the card to the club and the details are recorded and electronically sent to the National Handicapping System central database via the club's GOLF Link connection.
GOLF Link then calculates the ACR and updates the golfer’s handicaps.  Handicap is adjusted immediately depending on the result.

Maintaining your golf handicap - conforming social rounds

RACV Golf Membership have made the decision to accept a limited number of Conforming Social Scores (CSS), for individuals and additionally upload scores for social groups of eight or more – playing in their own organised social competition.

We have thoroughly considered the ramifications of accepting CSSs and believe that this in no way detracts from the quality of the official handicap provided to our members. Guidelines have been established in order to manage and administer the acceptance of Individual and Social group CSSs. To view the process of submitting individual CSS's please click on this link.

Please familiarise yourself with the specific guidelines around submitting the Individual CSSs here. If you are interested in submitting CSS's for a social group please contact the golf team to receive the information resource.

If you have any questions do not hesitate contacting the Golf team by email on golf@racv.com.au or phone (03) 9944 8791.
