What are the minimum requirements for installing and using my Arlo system?

Pre-requisites:

You need the following to activate your Arlo system:

  1. A computer with a supported internet browser or a mobile device with a supported operating system (OS) version. The following browsers work with the Arlo web application:
    • Internet Explorer 10 or higher
    • Microsoft Edge
    • Firefox (latest version)
    • Safari on Mac OS X (latest version)
    • Chrome (latest version)
  2. The Arlo app requires the following OS versions:
    • Apple devices: iOS version 9.0 or higher
    • Android devices: Android 4.2.2 or higher
  3. If you use the Arlo app on an earlier OS version than these minimum versions, the Arlo app might not function as expected
  4. To download the mobile app for your Apple or Android device, you can visit your device's app store and search for Arlo

Where are the video clips stored?

Arlo cameras record video to the cloud every time motion or activity is detected. How long these recordings are retained in the cloud is determined by your service plan selection.

  • Basic Plan – rolling 7 days of cloud storage
  • Premier Plan – rolling 30 days of cloud storage
  • Elite Plan – rolling 60 days of cloud storage

Can I download the video clips?

Yes, clips can be downloaded from the cloud.

You can also connect a USB drive to the Arlo Pro 2 base station for optional local backup storage.

How do I set up my Arlo Pro 2 camera system?

These instructions apply to setting up Arlo Pro 2 Wire-Free cameras with Arlo Pro 2 base stations.

Note: Cameras must be synced one at a time.

To set up and sync Arlo Pro or Arlo Pro 2 Wire-Free cameras:

  1. Open the battery compartment by pressing the latch and pulling back gently
  2. Insert the battery and close the battery door
  3. Bring the camera within 30 to 100 centimetres of the base station
  4. Sync the camera to the base station:
    • If you are using an Arlo base station, press the Sync button on the side of the base station for about two seconds and then release the button.
Note: If you press the Sync button on the Arlo base station for too long, the LED under the USB symbol blinks amber for 10 minutes. While the USB LED is blinking amber, the sync process is blocked.
    • If you are using an Arlo Pro or Arlo Pro 2 base station, press the button on the top of the base station for about two seconds and then release the button.
  5. Wait for the sync status LED to blink green.
  6. Press the Sync button on top of the camera for about two seconds and then release the button. A blue LED on the camera blinks rapidly to confirm sync. If the LED on the camera blinks amber, the sync is not successful. You must repeat the sync process.
  7. Check the camera LED on the base station. If the camera LED on the base station turns solid green, the sync process is complete.
  8. Repeat these steps for each camera.

Note: If you do not complete the sync process within 60 seconds, press the button on the top of the base station and try again.

What is the maximum video resolution of Arlo cameras?

If your home wireless network has the capacity, Arlo Pro 2 cameras can record and send up to 1080p high-definition video.

You can adjust video quality manually by choosing from the available options in your camera's video settings.

If a camera detects low bandwidth, the Arlo system automatically reduces the resolution of the video stream to accommodate the lower bandwidth.

How many Arlo cameras can I view at the same time?

You can stream simultaneously from a maximum of five Arlo cameras that are connected to a single base station. To start streaming a sixth camera, you must pause one of the active streams.

If you have an Elite plan with multiple base stations, you can stream five cameras from each base station simultaneously, up to a theoretical maximum of 15.

You might not be able to stream from all five cameras per base station if your WiFi network has limited bandwidth or if you are uploading other files while Arlo is streaming.

What are activity zones and how do I create them for my Arlo Pro 2 camera?

A zone focuses motion detection on a specific area. You can create up to three zones for each Pro 2 camera. By default, motion detection observes the entire camera frame.

To create zones:

Log in to your Arlo account at arlo.netgear.com

  1. Click or tap Settings > My Devices
  2. Click or tap the camera for which you are creating a zone
  3. Scroll to Activity Zones to create and customise zones
  4. Click or tap Snapshot to view what the camera sees
  5. Click or tap Zoom to see more detail
  6. Click or tap Create New Zone. A rectangle represents a zone and displays at the top left of the image
  7. To resize the zone, drag the corners of the zone
  8. Click or tap within the zone
  9. Click or tap and hold within the zone to reposition it
  10. To customise the zone name, click or tap Name
  11. Enter a name for the zone
  12. Click or tap Save to save your settings

How does the motion detection feature work on my Arlo cameras?

Arlo Pro 2 Wire-Free cameras trigger when the infrared technology detects an object that is warmer than the surrounding environment. The motion sensor is more sensitive to side-to-side movement across its field of view than to movement directly toward or away from the camera. The motion sensitivity settings range from one (low sensitivity) to 100 (high sensitivity).

How do I set up local storage backups on a USB device using my Arlo Pro base station?

All Arlo video recordings are stored to the cloud, but you can connect a USB device to the Arlo Pro base station and use the USB device as a second location to store Arlo Wire-Free and Arlo Pro Wire-Free recordings locally. Local storage to a USB device cannot be used on its own as a substitute for cloud recording.

If you connect a USB device, the camera records to both the cloud and the USB device. If the camera and base station are powered on, but your Internet connection goes down, the camera continues to record to the USB device.

The Arlo app notifies you if the USB device is low on storage space or is full. If you select automatic overwrite, the oldest recordings are automatically deleted when available storage on the USB device is below 20%. Unrelated files that are not in the Arlo folder are not deleted by automatic overwrite.

Required hardware:

  • An Arlo Pro base station
  • A USB flash drive or external hard drive with at least 100-200 MB of available space. If you are using best quality video settings, one hour of recordings is approximately 180 MB. If you have several Arlo cameras, have cameras in high-traffic areas, or have your cameras set to record long video segments, you might need more storage space.

Note: Network-attached storage (NAS) devices and drives with multiple partitions are not currently supported.

Do not use the Arlo Pro base station to format storage devices with more than 2 TB of storage capacity. The base station formats storage devices using the FAT32 file system, which supports a maximum of 2 TB of storage space. The formatting process reduces the capacity of larger storage devices to a maximum of 2 TB.

To set up local backup storage on an Arlo Pro base station:

  1. Plug the USB device into one of the two USB ports on the back of the Arlo Pro base station
  2. Launch the Arlo app or log in to your Arlo account at arlo.netgear.com
  3. Tap or click Settings > My Devices
  4. Tap or click the Arlo Pro base station into which you inserted the USB device
  5. Tap or click Local Storage
  6. If you see a green circle next to USB Device 1 and the status message Ready, skip to step 8
  7. Note: If you already named your USB Device using a computer, the name displays instead of USB Device 1. If you insert a second unnamed USB device, it displays as USB Device 2.

If you see the message “Requires Formatting” next to USB Device 1 or USB Device 2, the USB device is not in the correct format (FAT32). You must format the USB device before you can use it for local storage.

Formatting the USB device erases all data from the device. If you want to keep any files that are on the USB device, copy those files to another location before you format the USB device. Do not use the Arlo Pro base station to format storage devices with more than 2 TB of storage capacity. The formatting process reduces the capacity of larger storage devices to a maximum of 2 TB.

  8. To delete all files on your USB device and format it for local video storage
    • Tap or click next to the USB device that you want to format
    • Tap or click Format USB Device
    • Wait for USB Device Status to change from Formatting to Ready
  9. If you do not want old videos to be deleted when your USB device is low on storage space, tap or click the slider next to Automatic Overwrite to turn it off. If automatic overwrite is turned off, the Arlo app notifies you when storage gets low so that you can enable local storage backup on a different USB device. If storage is completely full and automatic overwrite is turned off, videos are only recorded to the cloud until you turn on automatic overwrite or enable a different USB device

Warning: Do not remove the USB device while it is formatting. The USB device might become permanently unusable.

If you want a second USB device for when your first USB device is full, you can follow the same steps to add a second USB device, but you can only enable one USB device at a time.

How do I change my Arlo camera’s power management settings?

Arlo Pro 2 Wire-Free cameras allow you to choose power management settings to optimise battery life, video quality, or a balance of both.

Note: In addition to these settings, usage also affects battery life. The following factors can reduce battery life:

  • Extremely cold temperatures (below 0°C)
  • Low light environments – as this requires the infrared sensors to work harder
  • Frequent motion triggering
  • Longer video recordings
  • Weak connection to the base station

To change your power management settings:

  1. Launch the Arlo app or log in to your Arlo account at arlo.netgear.com.
  2. Tap or click Settings > My Devices.
  3. Select the camera whose power management settings you want to change.
  4. Tap or click Video Settings.

    • To balance battery life and video quality, select Optimised.
    • To extend your battery life, select May reduce video quality. This setting reduces video quality but improves battery life.
    • For the best video quality, select May reduce battery life. This setting reduces battery life but provides the best video quality.
    • To balance battery life and video quality, select Balances video quality and battery life.
  6. If you are logged in to your Arlo account on a computer, scroll down to VIDEO QUALITY AND BATTERY USAGE and select a power setting:
    • To extend your battery life, select May reduce video quality. This setting reduces video quality but improves battery life.
    • For the best video quality, select May reduce battery life. This setting reduces battery life but provides the best video quality.
    • To balance battery life and video quality, select Balances video quality and battery life.
  7. For more information about battery life, see How can I extend my Arlo Pro 2 Wire-Free camera’s battery life?

How can I extend my Arlo Pro 2 Wire-Free camera’s battery life?

Arlo Pro 2 Wire-Free cameras are battery-powered and are not intended for continuous recording. The batteries in your Arlo Pro 2 Wire-Free cameras last for about 4 to 6 months with normal usage, which is about 5 minutes or recording a day.

Use these tips to maximise your camera’s battery life:

  • For Arlo Pro 2 Wire-Free cameras, use only the Arlo Pro rechargeable batteries supplied inside your package or replacement batteries from Netgear.
  • Ensure that your Arlo system is running the latest firmware.
  • Use the Optimised or Best Battery Life power setting.
  • Configure your cameras to record shorter videos.
  • Position your Arlo Pro 2 Wire-Free camera a maximum of 300 feet (90 meters) from the base station.
  • Do not place your Arlo system near multiple WiFi routers.
  • Do not place your Arlo system directly on top of the WiFi router.
