Flat tyres were the callout of the day when RACV CEO Neil Taylor hitched a ride with a mobile tyre technician in one of RACV’s new Mobile Tyres vans last week.

Roadside flats

The first job of the day for CEO Neil and tyre technician Joe Sleeman was at a shopping strip in Blackburn, where Kostantina Tzanakis discovered a flat tyre when she went to get ingredients to make moussaka for lunch.

“I heard a ‘boom boom’ noise, it was scary because I always look after my car, I always service it and use good tyres,” she said.

Kostantina said RACV Mobile Tyres was a great service because she didn’t want to “drive it like that” to a garage. She was back on the road in less than an hour.

Next was Neha Verma, at a wholesaler in Clayton, where she and husband Sandeep were buying supplies for their restaurant.

When they returned to their car in the car park, they found two of their tyres were flat. The culprits were two nails.

With Sandeep due to start work very soon, they needed help fast. Neil and Joe arrived within 15 minutes of the callout and had Sandeep back on the road within another 15 minutes. Plenty of time to get to work.

“RACV Mobile Tyres is a very good idea. We were thinking it would take a lot of time,” Neha said.

Booked and delivered

RACV Mobile Tyres also fits new tyres via its online booking service.

Charlotte Clarke had booked an appointment with her mechanic for a service the following week, but the tyres were urgent.

“It’s school holidays, I can’t not have the car for half a day, it would be painful,” she said.

Charlotte was able to relax in her home as Joe fitted her new tyres on the street outside. Within an hour, the car was ready to drive.

All in a day’s work

Joe Sleeman started with RACV when Mobile Tyres launched a couple of months ago. He found out about the job from his wife, Indah, who also works for RACV.

At his previous company Joe worked in maintenance, and one of his duties was driving the CEO around.

Joe says he has always been interested in the automotive side of things and wanted to get into the industry.

“I love it, every day is different,” he said.

“It’s fixing tyres, but no two jobs are the same, with different people and different locations, you don’t know what the next job will be.”

Joe attends about 10 jobs each day.

CEO on the road

RACV MD and CEO Neil Taylor said he was impressed with the technology used by RACV Mobile Tyres technicians, especially the air pressure jack.

He was also very impressed by the way Joe interacted with all the members.

“RACV Mobile Tyres builds on how we support our members. It’s early days for the trial but we have received good feedback.”
