Life-saving program wins major award

An innovative program to save the lives of vulnerable people during bushfires has taken out the top prize in Victoria’s Fire Awareness Awards.

The project, called the Cockatoo Ready2Go project, connects people who need help with people who live nearby and are in a position to give that help.

Created by Echo Youth & Family Services Inc, the project won the RACV Insurance Award for Excellence, which is worth $10,000.

The Fire Awareness Awards celebrate individuals, community groups and organisations who have developed projects to help reduce the impact of bushfires in Victoria. The award presentations were held at the RACV City Club.

As part of the winning project, the group produced a training manual to help other communities protect elderly and vulnerable residents.

The 2016 winners were honoured in front of more than 200 people, including community representatives and emergency services personnel.

RACV continues to be a major sponsor of the program, understanding first-hand the impact that fires can have on the community.
