RACV people: the project manager

RACV RoyalAuto magazine

From office fitouts to a brand-new resort, Sarah Mahmoud manages building projects across RACV.

I currently look after the team that manages all the capital projects at RACV, from our retail shops to the resorts, clubs and office buildings.

I also directly manage the construction projects that are significant to RACV.  I have been heavily involved in the new Cape Schanck Resort build and was based in a site shed for six months.

I work on projects from the very start and see them through to completion. It’s really rewarding to think about what to do with a particular space and then witness the concept come to life.

I jumped at the opportunity to work on the new Cape Schanck Resort because you don’t get a chance to work on such a magnificent building every day. I’ve typically worked on projects with a value of less than $15 million. This project is on the next level in value and complexity.

I love what I do. This job is the perfect blend for me because I have a technical side to my role but I also get to deal with many diverse people. I really like that balance.

My background is in civil engineering but I fell into project management. My friends from university always thought I would be a project manager and they were right.

Communication is so important in my role. I’m always dealing with people from different backgrounds: managers, builders, architects, lawyers, accountants, surveyors, and suppliers. Understanding how to communicate ensures everyone is engaged throughout the process.

One of the most challenging parts of my job is to deliver the project scope that the client wants within the agreed budget. That’s why the people side of it becomes really important, so that you can coordinate across the board and solve any issues.

I sometimes wonder what people did before computers and emails. I couldn’t live without my laptop. It’s central to my role because it gives me access to everything whenever and wherever I need it.
