How a crash changed my life

I am a motorcyclist with 20+ years riding experience and I was involved in an accident in July 2011.

I was treated by staff at the Alfred for cracks to my neck vertebra, damage/dislocation to my left hip, damaged knee, broken bones in my left leg and full rotation of my left ankle.

During the past five years, I have had skin infections, two types of external fixation frame work, time with wound specialists, many hours in rehabilitation and I am still awaiting a full hip replacement.

I have met many trauma sufferers and talking about what happened I think has helped with the process of healing.

I now do presentations for Road Trauma Support Services Victoria.

The accident changed me and others affected in some way. I now decide to do something instead of just wanting to do it, and when I wake each day it is a good day. 

I have thanked those who turned up to the scene and the doctors and my family and friends who helped me to live again. One person I wanted to meet was the driver who ran into me but sadly he died earlier this month.

Anna is right

MICA paramedic, Anna Sutton’s comment (Impact, RA, Oct):  “Don’t drive angry. Stop worrying about being one minute late” should be used by TAC in an advertising campaign.

I am still astounded by the number of impatient drivers, both car and truck,  on our roads. The road trauma article was RA’s best ever ... well done.

Hope it has some effect.

Train drivers

I think much more needs to be done in the area of driver training – a car, like a gun, is safe until the human element is introduced. Things such as driver training courses in schools, mandatory driving courses for newly licensed drivers and testing of parents prior to them being able to teach their children to drive.

We need to have AAA drivers – the right Attitude, Awareness and Ability.

SES is critical

Impact seemed to include every emergency service other than the State Emergency Service.

The SES is the largest provider of Road Rescue in the state and the most well-equipped and well-trained in road rescue.

As a SES volunteer, the majority of my time in the SES is spent with road rescue units. The SES is also the largest service for all rescue (road, rail, general, urban and land search). Our base qualification is known as “general rescue” and it is one of the first things we learn in the service.

The SES does not get the recognition it should. We are volunteer-based.

When I ask people what the SES does. The usual answer is “oh you guys provide my power” or “ you come and clean my gutter and trim my trees back”.

 I would like to see an article focusing on the first responders involved in the rescues mentioned and maybe some articles focusing on the individual services too.

As motorists we must be conscious that while on a pleasant drive we must do right things, otherwise we are in a death machine. There are many distractions. Stringent laws and policing can help only to a certain extent in reducing fatalities on road. It is our duty to protect ourselves and other road users from serious road accidents.

Find key answers

The unfortunate truth is that police attending crashes, doctors mending broken bodies and physicists calculating velocity are as qualified to speculate on the causes of car crashes as I am as a licensed driving instructor. 

Traditional road safety research deals predominantly with the period after the bang, whereas the critical period occurs in the moments before: why is the crash about to happen?

Why don’t some drivers crash? What are the common factors among members with a lifetime of crash-free driving?

Thank you RACV for observing and caring about the road toll.

To have real “Impact”, please help re-frame the research towards finding the answers to that all-important why.

Meanwhile, it is wise to increase the distance to the car in front, don’t drive in someone’s blind spot, drive to the conditions, be  self-aware, buy a safer car and campaign for road safety.

Check your rego, people

Recently, my wife, who was parked, was questioned by police traffic patrol on who owned our car. They then cut the screws holding the plates and left her in the rain saying if she has started the car they would have also fined her $700. I left work after a call asking why I hadn't paid the registration. At VicRoads we learned the car we bought in March 2015 was still in the dealer's name and the rego had lapsed. So back to the dealer for roadworthy, re-registration and re-signing of transfer papers. We have no label now as a reminder that the "rego is due". Check your registration people.

Colorado rules for speed

I read some things about the Colorado a while ago, one said that Holden insists it's not a ute it's a truck. Does that mean it will have to drive along the Monash Freeway at the posted truck speed - 90km/k?
