Trust is a not something to be given lightly, and Aimee Gillies, a 32-year-old sales manager from Camberwell in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, was cautious when handing over the keys to her Jeep Compass to someone she had never met.
“I was nervous at first, but the process of listing my car had been so thorough, I felt it would be looked after given all the checks that were involved on both sides. My first renter was really nice, and the car was returned in perfect condition,” says Aimee.
RACV DriveMyCar is a peer-to-peer car-sharing service. Mobility product manager Max Wang says RACV understands that many members are nervous about the thought of renting out their car to someone they have never met, because “you love your cars as much as we do”.
“That is why we only work with well-established partners such as DriveMyCar, a highly trusted brand in Australia, with more than seven years’ experience and 10,000 successful rentals on their books. Since it began, DriveMyCar has paid out $6.5 million to vehicle owners.”
Aimee, now an RACV member since joining RACV DriveMyCar three months ago, started a new job based in the CBD earlier in the year, and realised that her car was hardly being used since she didn’t need it for her commute.
“My partner has a car, so we don’t need the second car right now, but we plan to move to the suburbs next year. When I found RACV DriveMyCar it was the perfect interim solution. The staff had all the information I needed, and the joining process was very easy,” says Aimee. RACV DriveMyCar offers rentals from seven to 365 days, and it is free for owners to list their cars on the platform.
The service uses a verification process called PeerPass to ensure security, and to thoroughly screen and verify all renters. PeerPass sets the standard for building trust in peer-to-peer marketplaces by verifying and managing online reputation including ID verification, credit checks, feedback, social media verification, and fraud prevention.
For further peace of mind, all insurance costs are covered by the rental fee. Renters are covered by full comprehensive insurance, including accidental damage and theft, and renters must return the car in a clean condition.
“I will continue renting out the Jeep over the summer to cover the costs of keeping the car. I trust that RACV has all bases covered and that my car is in good hands,” says Aimee.
