What's the difference between Emergency Roadside Assistance and Car Insurance?
Emergency Roadside Assistance provides breakdown support for mechanical issues and problems like flat batteries, punctured tyres and lockouts.
Car Insurance is separate to Emergency Roadside Assistance.
Car Insurance provides cover for damage you may unintentionally cause to people’s properties or vehicles as a result of an accident on the road, as well as other listed events such as theft, vandalism or fire. It doesn't include Emergency Roadside Assistance cover.
How soon can I use RACV Roadside Assist?
You can get emergency roadside assistance 24 hours after you purchase your subscription.
If you're broken down now and need immediate help, call 13 11 11.
Can any driver access roadside assistance in my vehicle?
Yes, a licensed driver using your nominated vehicle has access to your roadside assistance subscription.
With Roadside Care and Extra Care, anyone driving your nominated vehicle is covered.
If you have Total Care, you’re covered in any vehicle you’re driving. Anyone driving your nominated vehicle is also covered.
Does roadside assistance include towing?
Yes, all levels of RACV Emergency Roadside Assistance include towing. The kilometre limit is different for each plan:
- Roadside Care: 20km
- Extra Care: 60km
- Total Care: 100km
Here’s how it works:
In metro Melbourne
You’ll be towed in your chosen direction, up to your plan’s kilometre limit, or to the nearest attending RACV Service Centre. If you need to be towed further than this, there may be out-of-pocket costs.
In regional Victoria
If you have Extra Care or Total Care, you’ll be towed in your chosen direction, up to your plan’s kilometre limit, or to the nearest attending RACV Service Centre. If you need to be towed further than this, there may be out-of-pocket costs.
If you have Roadside Care, you’ll only be towed to the nearest attending Service Centre.
Can I change my nominated vehicle?
Yes, you can. Call us on 13 RACV to change your vehicle.
How long does roadside assistance take?
Usually, we’ll have someone out to help you within an hour of your call. However, sometimes the time it takes for help to arrive may vary depending on how great the demand for assistance is at any one time.
Am I covered if I drive interstate?
You may be able to get roadside assistance from our interstate affiliates. If your needs aren’t covered by our affiliates, we may pay to have someone attend your vehicle or tow it somewhere to be repaired – make sure you call us first so we can authorise this for you.
Does RACV Roadside Assist cover caravans and trailers?
Yes, when towed by your nominated vehicle, Total Care and Extra Care covers assistance for caravan and trailer breakdowns.
If you breakdown, we'll arrange towing and offer some transport options. We take into consideration where you’ve stopped in either a metro or regional area, and your distance from home. Your type of roadside assistance subscription will determine how far we can tow your vehicles.
If you travel with a caravan or trailer over long distances including to regional areas, we recommend Total Care.
Or, if you tow a caravan or trailer more locally but still take trips out of town, we recommend Extra Care.
Size and weight limits apply to the types of vehicles, caravans and trailers we can service. For details, refer to page 20 of our Terms and Conditions.
