Say aloha to Hawaii, possibly one of the most romantic places on the planet for couples, thanks to its incredible untamed landscapes, enriching culture, and diverse activities. Hawaii has eight main islands – including the most well-known such as Oahu, the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai - and 131 smaller ones.

To help you plan your romantic getaway, we’ve selected six must-do activities across Hawaii that allow for a deeper connection and are uniquely Hawaiian.

Whether you’re relaxing on the island's pristine beaches, visiting any of Hawaii's impressive natural wonders, or exploring the culture and history, be sure to include activities that reveal how special Hawaii truly is.

If you’re planning to drive while you’re overseas, you may need an International Driving Permit. You can apply online but check the country you’re visiting requires one before you travel and allow time for processing.

Waikiki Beach in Hawaii

Dip your toes in the water at Waikiki Beach before hiking up Diamond Head.

Hike Diamond Head State Park

One of Waikiki’s most iconic natural landmarks, Diamond Head (Lē'ahi), makes for a stunning outing for two. The expansive coastal views, historic hiking trail and 300,000-year-old crater make this state park a must-do for nature loving couples.

After making the strenuous climb and switchbacks to the summit, enjoy a special moment taking in the epic 360-degree view. If you’re visiting in winter, watch for passing humpback whalesr which adds to the enchantment of this ancient sacred site.

Stroll by day and stargaze by night around Mauna Kea.

Stargazing Mauna Kea

If you’re looking for a romantic activity to enjoy with your significant other, stargazing at Mauna Kea is one of Hawaii’s best excursions. Standing under a star-speckled sky looking off into distant galaxies is something you’ll always remember, and Mauna Kea, on the Big Island, is the best place across the Aloha State.

Mauna Kea is a million-year-old dormant volcano, some 4,000+ metres above sea level. Its elevation and distance from lights make this one of the best dark sky zones in the world. Don’t believe us? Several independent astronomical research facilities and 13 observatories are based on Mauna Kea.

It's best to book a tour to get the most out of your visit. Along with the convenience of transport to the top, (as well as extra layers and hot chocolate, as it gets cold at the summit), the expert commentary adds an extra dimension to your night.

catamaran on a Hawaiian beach

Booking a catamaran tour is an affordable (and romantic) way to sail around the Hawaiian islands.

Sail into the sunset

It’s a common dream to sail off into the sunset with your loved one, leaving all your worries behind. In Hawaii, it’s easy to make that dream come true - for a day at least - thanks to countless options to get out on the water. Plus, Hawaii’s famous trade winds ensure near-perfect sailing conditions year-round.

The most affordable way to glide across Hawaii’s azure waters is on a group sailing or catamaran tour. There are plenty to book across Hawaii’s four main islands. If you’d prefer a more exclusive environment, sans the crowds, go private and rent a boat and skipper. If you’re after a sailing experience, go for a totally ‘only us’ vibes and charter a vessel. It’s the ultimate freedom.

Aside from sailing into the sunset, popular sailing destinations include the dramatic towering cliffs of the Nā Pali coastline, the excellent snorkelling at Maui’s Molokini crater, and the Nananhoa Pinnacles on Lanai Island.

night diving with manta rays

Night diving with the manta rays is a magical experience.

Night snorkelling or diving with manta rays

Making magical moments together is an integral part of any couples’ getaway. On the Big Island, snorkelling or diving with manta rays by night is about as magical as it gets.

Located off the coast of Kona, reef manta rays feed nightly, undisturbed by the visitors keen to see the 5.5-metre wingspan of these gentle marine giants. Witness them gracefully swooping and somersaulting through the ocean with their mouths open to catch their nightly plankton.

If you’ve got your scuba diving certification, book a manta ray night dive, allowing you to view them feeding from the ocean floor. It’s an intimate, unforgettable experience that you’ll never forget.

Lomi Lomi and KaHuna are traditional Hawaiian massages.

Enjoy traditional Hawaiian massages

You wouldn’t visit Hawaii without seeing the beach, and it would also be remiss to skip a Lomi Lomi or KaHuna massage.

Lomi Lomi is a traditional nurturing Hawaiian massage technique (also known as a loving hands massage) that uses slow flow movements to soothe the body and boost energy. Despite being a gentle technique, it’s extremely helpful at restoring your mana (personal power).

A KaHuna massage is a style of Lomi Lomi that uses body-long strokes that feel like waves, with a focus on the breath as part of the healing experience. It’s accompanied by music and can be deeply transformational.

Around all major tourist areas, you’ll find traditional massage centres that offer couples’ massages so you can experience these extraordinary healing techniques, leaving you both feeling lighter, brighter and more energised.

Molokini Crater off Maui in Hawaii

Helicopter tours can take you high above the beautiful Hawaiian scenery.

Soar above the Hawaiian islands

As Hawaii is blessed with spectacular natural landscapes, it can be challenging to take it all in with limited vacation days. Take the shortcut by booking a helicopter tour to capture the best of the lush canopies, ancient volcanoes, cascading waterfalls, and inviting white-sand beaches from the sky.

If you’re in Kauai and comfortable with it, book a ‘doors off’ chopper tour to see the island at its finest.

Whether you’re soaring over Maui’s Haleakala crater, Kauai’s Waimea Canyon, or overactive lava on the Big Island, appreciating some of the best scenery in the world will naturally bring you and your special someone closer together.
