What is an International Driving Permit?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a translation of your Australian driver licence photo card that allows you to drive in a foreign country.
An IDP may be a requirement for driving or renting a car in many countries, and driving without one could be illegal.
Having one means you don’t have to apply for a licence in the country you’re visiting and it:
- works in more than 150 countries
- is printed in 9 languages, so that local authorities can read it
- is valid for 12 months from the date of issue
- can be a useful form of photo ID.
The easiest and quickest way to apply for an IDP is online. Plan ahead and apply early to ensure your IDP arrives in time.
The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) is the only authorised distributer of IDPs for Australian driver licence holders. As their sales agent, we can process your application on their behalf.
