From sustainable nuptials to adventurous wedding photos, contemporary couples are choosing to embrace new ways to express their individuality when getting hitched. Spring wedding expo season is here, which means that everyone’s scouting out the latest food, photography, interiors and wedding venue trends to incorporate into their big day. Here are six of the best to keep an eye on this wedding season:
Waste not, want not
With couples being more eco-conscious than ever before, there are many clever ways to reduce the environmental footprint of a wedding. From sourcing local, bee-friendly blooms to use in bouquets and table settings, to using paperless stationary websites to send digital invites, buying a second-hand wedding dress and sending home guests with small plants or seeds to grow at home instead of the more traditional bonbonniere or gift, many couples are making small changes that are resulting in a more sustainable wedding.
Shared fare
Instead of sitting down to enjoy one big meal, many wedding menus are offering shared plates and serve-yourself fare set up at stations scattered around the venue. Giving guests more food options and flexibility, shared plates are a good way to offer variety while taking care of everyone’s dietary requirements. Having a dessert station or table off to the side serving cheese plates is a great way to get everyone up out of their seats and rubbing shoulders with other guests.
Stripped-back wedding cakes
In the past, multi-tiered wedding cakes covered in royal icing were all the rage. Then came the elaborately decorated cakes perfect for generating Instagram buzz. And let’s not forget the more recent trend for doing away with cakes altogether in favour of alternatives like cheese stacks and donut towers. Lately, simple, stripped-back, one-tier wedding cakes are making a comeback. A practical, low-cost choice that minimises wastage, many couples are choosing to serve a cake that isn’t a ‘wedding cake’ at all – just a humble, unpretentious, well-made, delicious cake.
Green scene
Many wedding trends begin as interiors trends, and the popularity of indoor plants is only continuing to grow. Once upon a time, wedding décor was all about flowers, but these days you’re more likely to find indoor plants and other greenery adorning a wedding venue. From having large, potted fiddle leaf figs scattered throughout the reception venue, to decorating tables with smaller ferns instead of floral bouquets, and even featuring a large installation of potted plants on a wall as a dramatic backdrop, creating a green haven is all the rage on the wedding scene.

Whether they’re keen to cut costs and save money for a house deposit or looking to avoid the hassle of long-haul travel, more and more couples are choosing to honeymoon in their own backyard instead of flying overseas for a long break. From heading down the coast for a few days of rest and relaxation by the beach or booking into a five-star luxury resort in Queensland, home grown honeymoons are trending with savvy Australian couples.
Adventurous images
Wedding photos have come a long way from the days where the bride and groom struck cheesy, stilted poses in unnatural settings. Instead, contemporary wedding images are typically full of life, action, movement and colour. Many couples are going one step further by choosing to have their wedding photos taken in blockbuster settings that demonstrate their love of adventure. From taking to the skies in a hot air balloon with Global Ballooning to heading deep into the forest to take memorable images amid dirt tracks and towering trees, wedding photos aren’t what they used to be.
