How to get the maximum life of your battery
Tighter emission regulations and fuel economy requirements have driven vehicle manufacturers to introduce new technologies which often place higher loads on the vehicle’s battery and electrical system. Car batteries have a limited life span which is on average around 3.5 years, and once a battery starts to fail it is much less likely to respond to recharging. This is because the positive plates in the battery degrade over time, which reduces the battery’s ability to store and deliver power to start and operate the vehicle.
Almost all vehicle batteries are now maintenance free, which means that you only need to follow the tips below to ensure you obtain the maximum service life of your vehicle's battery:
- Regularly drive your vehicle
- Never leave your battery for long periods without being charged
- If you drive mainly on short trips, consider purchasing a multi-stage battery charger which will allow you to charge and maintain your battery to keep it in good condition.
Safety
Take care when handling batteries, as incorrect handling can cause serious injuries. Batteries contain sulphuric acid and give off explosive hydrogen gases, so naked flames should always be kept away from batteries. Children should be kept away from batteries.
