New electric vehicle charge station powers up in Torquay

RACV Torquay Resort now home to state’s fifth Chargefox rapid-charging station.

With 2.7 million visitors a year the Great Ocean Road is Victoria’s top tourist attraction, and now electric vehicle owners can enjoy its spectacular scenery with a fully charged car thanks to Chargefox, the Victorian government, Australian Renewable Energy Agency and RACV.

Energy minister Lily D’Ambrosio was recently joined by Chargefox CEO Marty Andrews and RACV executive general manager of home and energy Nicole Brasz to commission RACV Torquay Resort’s new ultra-rapid charging station on its property at No. 1 Great Ocean Road.

The Chargefox ultra-rapid charging station is the fifth to open in Victoria, with another three scheduled for completion by the end of the year. Ultimately the network will connect Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, with additional networks in Tasmania and Western Australia.

Lily D’Ambrosio said: “More of these charging stations will boost tourism, reduce carbon emissions and help us build a cleaner, more sustainable future.”

EV owners can top up their batteries in as little as 15 minutes at one of four charging stations using 100 per cent renewable energy, located outside the resort’s main entrance. 

“Torquay is the starting point to one of the world’s most scenic coastal drives,” said Nicole. “So to be able to offer a reliable and fast EV-charging station for people travelling along this beautiful coastline is exciting. This means EV drivers can travel more confidently and enjoy the drive instead of being concerned about where they can charge.

“Providing access to a quality network is critical, and RACV is pleased to work with Chargefox to deliver this network.”
