Travel insurance tips for dealing with volcano ash clouds

RACV External Communications

November 20, 2025

As volcanic activity continues to impact travel plans worldwide, RACV says it's crucial for travellers to be well-prepared and informed about their travel insurance options. Volcano ash clouds can cause significant disruptions, including flight cancellations, delays, and health risks.

According to National Geographic, there are approximately 1,900 potentially active volcanoes worldwide, with approximately 50-70 volcanic eruptions each year. Many of the world’s most active volcanoes are located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, a 40,000km horseshoe shaped area of the Pacific Ocean.

RACV Executive General Manager Leisure Craig Peachey said travellers should review their travel insurance coverage and follow this advice to help stay protected during your travels.

Understand your coverage

“Before embarking on your journey, thoroughly review your travel insurance policy to understand what is covered in the event of volcanic activity. Look for specific clauses related to natural disaster provisions, trip cancellation terms, delay compensation and emergency medical coverage,” Mr Peachy said.

“Ensure that your policy includes explicit coverage for volcanic ash clouds and related travel disruptions.

Consider your coverage

Consider a travel insurance policy that offers broad cover across multiple scenarios. Key features to look for include natural disaster coverage, emergency medical evacuation, trip interruption and cancellation benefits and 24/7 emergency assistance services.

Document everything

In the event of a volcanic ash cloud disruption, meticulous documentation is crucial.

“Keep all travel-related receipts, collect official documentation from airlines and local authorities, take photographs of any travel disruptions and maintain a detailed timeline of events to help you when you make a travel insurance claim,” Mr Peachy said.

Health considerations

Volcanic ash can pose significant health risks, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions, asthma, allergies and compromised immune systems.

“Check your travel insurance to see if it includes medical coverage for ash-related health issues, potential medical evacuation and coverage for emergency medical treatments,” Mr Peachy explained.

RACV recommends travellers stay informed and prepared by:

  • Monitoring volcanic activity in your destination.
  • Checking government travel advisories.
  • Maintaining flexible travel plans.
  • Have emergency contact information readily available.
  • Carefully review your travel insurance policy to understand the extent of your coverage.
  • Prepare for potential disruptions by packing essential medications and protective gear.
  • Register your travel plans with local authorities to ensure you can receive timely updates and assistance.

“It is advisable to contact your insurance provider to clarify the specifics of volcanic ash cloud coverage,” Mr Peachy said.

“While volcanic activity remains unpredictable, informed travellers can minimise risks and protect their investments. By understanding your travel insurance coverage and being prepared, you may be better equipped to handle potential ash cloud disruption".

Consider booking travel insurance immediately after making travel deposits to maximise your protection and take time to thoroughly understand your policy's claim limits and excess payments.
