Building your cyber safety

From phishing calls and texts, to viruses and other fraudulent activity, cyber attacks are both on the rise and getting more sophisticated.

The best defence against these activities is to become more cyber aware and resilient. We've compiled some tips and resources to help you stay protected online.

Common cyber threats and how they occur

Phishing scams

When scammers ask for personal or financial details via emails, texts, calls or unreliable websites. They often offer deals that sound too good to be true, or pretend to be a large organisation or someone in need. If you think you've received a scam message, block the sender and don't respond.

Malware

Malicious software that hackers use to gain unauthorised access to your computer, phone or other device. Malware is often sent as links or files in emails, text messages or online ads. Stay safe and avoid clicking any suspicious links or opening suspicious files you receive.

Identity theft

When a hacker accesses your personal information (like a password or credit card) and uses it to impersonate you. They can create fake identity papers, apply for real ones under your name, steal money or gain other benefits. Watch out for unusual transactions across your online banking and email accounts.

Frequently asked questions

RACV is committed to promoting cyber safe practices and keeping your data protected. Here are some of the ways we help keep your information secure.

ID verification

When you become an RACV Member, we take ID verification steps to confirm your details, and to help prevent others from accessing your online account and personal details.

Secure log ins and verification

In the RACV App, you can set up a 6-digit passcode or log in with biometrics (face or fingerprint ID). This makes it easy to log in securely every time. If you manually log out under 'Account', you'll need to use your email and password the next time you log in.

When you log in online or speak with our team on the phone, we'll send a one-time code to your mobile or email address to verify that you are the one accessing your account.

Strong encryption

We use strong encryption methods to ensure your data is secure, and maintain arrangements to restrict access to it.

Privacy charter

Protecting your data is important to us. To learn more about how we collect, handle and safeguard your personal information, read our Privacy Charter.

Established industry practices

We adhere to recognised industry standards in cyber security. This includes compliance with the ISO 27001:2022 information security framework, cyber security training for all staff and regular independent assessments of our cyber security program.

Occasionally, we may restrict your online account to help keep it safe. If this happens, you'll need to reset your password to log back in.

To help keep your account secure, we recommend you use a strong, unique passphrase that consists of 4 or more random words. This makes it easy for you to remember, but hard for someone else to guess.

Visit the Australian Cyber Security Centre's website to learn more about passphrases.

We recommend you reset your password to ensure your account is secure.

Remember, you can always report suspicious activity by calling us on 13 72 28.
