RACV is calling on the Victorian Government to introduce a $500 home safety and security rebate.
When it comes to home security, choose professionals over DIY, says RACV
RACV is urging Victorians to prioritise professionally installed home security systems over do-it-yourself solutions, as concerns around home safety and break-ins continue.
With almost 28,000 residential burglaries recorded across Victoria in 2025, according to Victoria’s Crime Statistics Agency, RACV says proactive measures such as installing a tailored home security system can help deter opportunistic crime and protect households and belongings.
In early 2026, RACV heard from more than 5,000 Victorians through its Home Safety Pulse, with one in three saying they feel less safe in their home compared to 12 months ago. Most linked this to increasing concerns about crime, even where they had not experienced it firsthand.
Those who felt safer at home largely attributed this to improving their home security.
General Manager RACV Trades, Solar & Home Security Adrian Steidle said while DIY systems may appear convenient, professionally installed systems offer greater reliability, coverage and peace of mind.
“A quality home security system should be tailored for your property and installed by a licensed professional to ensure it works as intended,” Mr Steidle said.
“Professional installers can identify vulnerabilities around your home, set up a system to suit your layout, and ensure critical entry points are properly protected – something that can easily be missed with a DIY setup.”
Mr Steidle said professionally installed systems not only act as a visual deterrent to potential intruders, but can also provide real-time monitoring and alerts, helping homeowners respond quickly if an incident occurs.
“Security systems can’t prevent every incident, but they are proven to discourage opportunistic crime and can provide vital evidence if something does happen,” he said.
“We know that thieves are using increasingly tech-savvy methods – like a radio frequency jammer – to disrupt DIY security systems. That’s where RACV Home Security can come in, use our expertise and find a tailored solution to your property’s security needs.”
RACV advice highlights that the most effective home security systems combine multiple measures – including CCTV cameras, alarms and sensor technology – and are supported by professional monitoring for around-the-clock protection.
RACV Home Security has seen increasing demand for home security solutions, installing 488 security systems in Victorian homes over the past 12 months, with May, June and July proving to be the busiest months.
Mr Steidle said this seasonal spike reflected heightened awareness of home security risks, particularly during shorter winter days when homes are more vulnerable.
“Winter is a time when many Victorians are out during daylight hours and return home after dark, which can create opportunities for intruders,” he said.
“Having a professionally installed system in place gives people confidence that their home is being monitored, even when they’re not there.”
“We also know that a home security system not only helps protect property, but helps people feel confident, safe and secure in their own homes.”
RACV is supporting its members seeking to feel more safe in their homes with a $50 discount on its Home Security Professional Monitoring service.
RACV members that sign up for professional monitoring will receive a $50 credit towards alarm servicing or maintenance each year. The offer is only available in Metro Melbourne. Terms and conditions apply.
“Home security is a long-term investment and we’re hoping to support our members with ongoing care and vigilance.”
RACV is reminding homeowners that a strong security setup should complement, not replace, basic measures such as secure locks, sensor lighting and maintaining good visibility around entry points.
“Simple steps like locking doors and windows, keeping your property well-lit and maintaining clear sightlines all play an important role,” Mr Steidle said.
“But a professionally installed security system ties all of these measures together, delivering a more comprehensive level of protection for your home and family.”
