Genesis has updated the GV80 luxury SUV with the addition of a new Coupe body style, but the diesel GV80 engine option is gone, in favour of its single 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine.

Genesis - the luxury arm of Hyundai - says it is making purchasing a GV80 large luxury SUV more straightforward. All Genesis GV80 models are now exclusively all-wheel drive, and all luxury features are now standard instead of an option. While this does raise the entry price of the GV80, Genesis said 95 per cent of buyers were selecting the luxury pack anyway, so it is effectively simplifying the purchase process.

How much does a Genesis GV80 cost?

There are now two body styles on offer in the Genesis GV80 large SUV line-up: the new five-seat Coupe and updated SUV which is available in both 6-seat and 7-seat configurations. All GV80 models are powered by a 3.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The most affordable model is the Genesis GV80 SUV with seven seats from $130,000, with a 6-seat executive version of the SUV taking the price to $133,000. The Genesis GV80 Coupe starts from $136,000, putting it close to its main competition from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Porsche.

How much does it cost to service a Genesis GV80?

Genesis offers one of the best aftersales packages in the segment for GV80 buyers. The initial purchase price includes the first five years of scheduled servicing (up to 50,000kms) and a five year unlimited kilometre warranty.

What features and technology does the Genesis GV80 have?

The Genesis GV80 features a long list of standard inclusions headlined by its technology and impressive 27-inch widescreen display that houses both infotainment and drive information display.

Features such as Bang and Olufsen sound system with 18 speakers, cabin fragrance system and fingerprint authentication to access personalised driver settings all add to the luxury feel. Rear seat passengers don't miss out in the GV80, with the optional $4500 rear seat entertainment system delivering twin 14.6-inch media displays and access to streaming platforms - ensuring two rear seat passengers can each access their own entertainment choices while travelling.

In addition to its long list of luxury features which are typically added options from other brands, Genesis says it will offer a wide range of customisation options so buyers can personalise their car to their own preference. This effectively means the Genesis GV80 is built-to-order with a production lead time of two-three months.

New 22-inch alloy wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport tyre package are added as standard, with the SUV receiving light exterior updates from original launch model.

Ten exterior paint colours, including three optional matte colours, are available across both the GV80 SUV and Coupe. A new colour called Bering Blue is available exclusively on the Coupe. Five interior colours in Nappa leather are available on the SUV, with an additional six available on the Coupe. Reflecting the sportier design focus of the GV80 Coupe, all upholstery has contrast stitching with matching seatbelts while the interior trim is exclusively real carbon fibre in the Coupe. Four optional trims including a printed weave and real wood are available for selection in the GV80 SUV.

Genesis GV80 exterior design

The Genesis GV80 combines a bold and imposing look that does just enough to separate it from its main German rivals. Genesis' signature front fascia, split LED headlights, and sleek lines create a premium look that's somewhat reminiscent of a Bentley. The new Coupe body style adds a sportier edge with a sloping roofline - overall, it adopts a more aggressive stance compared to the GV80 SUV.

What is the Genesis GV80 like inside?

The Genesis GV80 is a sumptuous large SUV which has been designed to a luxury brief, and it executes on it very well. There's a high level of finish and detail which creates a comfortable environment for driver and passengers.

As you'd expect for price, the attention to detail is excellent in the GV80 with heated and ventilated massaging seats in the front, and heating and ventilated seats to the second row passengers. A fragrance system enhances the GV80's cabin ambience in case it doesn't feel quite luxurious already.

Space is abundant for the first two rows with the two sunroofs bringing in plenty of light, which makes the cabin feel even more spacious. In the GV80 SUV model, the third row seats are mainly for children but could accommodate small adults or short journeys. With the third row in play, there is at least sufficient boot space in the GV80 for school and gym bags if you're using the extra seats to transport your kids' team mates from matches.

The Genesis GV80 Coupe has more overt sports styling compared to the SUV, including matching seat belts and rear carbon fibre. Overall, the cabin of GV80 Coupe will appeal to a different large SUV buyer - one that doesn't have as many passengers to carry on a regular basis.

How much boot space does the Genesis GV80 have?

Both seating configurations of the GV80 offer 745 litres of space with the third row down, which may be extended to 1097 litres with the second row folded. The GV80 Coupe has a smaller 644L cargo carrying capacity with the second row up, or 1033L with the second row down.

The Genesis GV80 has a braked towing capacity of 2722kg.

Is the Genesis GV80 good to drive?

The Genesis GV80 is now exclusively available with the single 3.5-litre V6 twin turbocharged petrol engine which generates 279kW and 530Nm. The V6 delivers plenty of punch, but is thirsty with a claimed fuel usage of 11.7L/100km (ADR Combined).

The GV80's ride is compliant. Whether sitting in the driver's position or as passenger, the GV80 delivers an environment in which you feel cosseted - which is reflected in how the car drives and handles. The GV80 is not overtly sporty, but the steering feel is decent, and there isn't too much noise that comes up from the larger alloy wheels, although a smaller wheel may well have delivered a more refined ride.

If you're looking for a more rewarding or sporty drive, the Mercedes-Benz GLC43 is more likely to appeal. Combined with its driving dynamics the GV80's engine is quite noisy, but doesn't boast the raucous exhaust note that you might expect from a twin-turbocharged V6.

How safe is the Genesis GV80?

The Genesis GV80 update introduces new safety technology to the SUV including Hyundai Highway Driving Assist 2 with improved smart cruise control, an in-cabin camera to monitor driver attention, and upgraded forward collision avoidance assist, lane following assist and remote smart parking.

Ten airbags are fitted as standard and two ISOFIX child safety anchoring points are fitted in the second row. The new Genesis GV80 SUV and Coupe are not currently safety rated by ANCAP.

How does the Genesis GV80 compare?

The Genesis GV80 Coupe challenges the BMW X6, Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, Audi Q8, and Lexus RX 500h F Sport with a lower pricing and generous standard features. While the BMW X6 and Mercedes GLE Coupe will boast brand prestige in the eyes of many, they may require costly options to match the GV80's level of features. The Lexus RX 500h is a valid and more practical alternative but lacks the dramatic coupe look of the GV80.

Should I buy a Genesis GV80?

Genesis says that it is attracting a wide range of buyers who are stepping up from its Hyundai brand or moving across from European vehicles that have become more expensive to maintain.

The brand's GV80 does represent relative affordability against its competitive set with the included standard features and servicing.

This is a sumptuous large SUV which has been designed to meet its luxury brief, and executes on it very well. There's clearly a high level of finish and detail in the GV80. For a family of two adults and two teenagers, the GV80 SUV six seater with the captain's chairs is an obvious pick. Any family that's transporting big kids or adults frequently in the second row will find that the GV80 offers incredibly comfortable accommodation - and if you're moving about smaller children, well, they're just going to feel like royalty.

With so many manufacturers introducing full electric or hybrid options, the GV80's powertrain may feel a bit old hat, but drivers looking for a conventional and comfortable large SUV will be delighted with their purchase.
