Five of the best bakeries near the Gold Coast

The Paddock Bakery, Miami

Find it at 20 Hibiscus Haven, Miami

Get out of bed and go for breakfast in bread, instead. You’ll be served up an in-house woodfired sourdough bread bowl loaded with chorizo, black beans, queso fresco, vegies and chipotle ranchero sauce.

Nestled in the treetops, this renovated 70-year-old Queenslander cottage is a picturesque spot for a lazy morning.

Short on time? Pick up a pork, pistachio and apple sausage roll, making sure to add a dollop of homemade chutney. And wash it all down with an oozing salted caramel and pretzel cookie-crumb doughnut.

Saigon Hot Bread, Carrara

Find it at 4 Elysium Road, Carrara

Will drive for doughnuts? Pop this one into your Google Maps, stat. Located in Carrara, the Vietnamese/Australian fusion bakery is a little out of the way from the usual tourist hotspots. But that’s what makes this hidden gem such a sparkling find.

Buy fresh bread for later, or order a pork banh mi for on-the-spot satisfaction. Menu highlights include pandan cupcakes, cheesy sriracha jaffles and red Thai chicken pies.

As for those doughnuts, the homemade jam ratio is spot-on – expertly spread throughout the huge, fluffy clouds.

The Bread Social, Tweed Heads

Find it at 12 Bay Street, Tweed Heads

Hailing from Byron Bay, this clever crew has brought their bread and pastries to warmer climes.

The loaves, each handcrafted and baked in a stone hearth oven using local ingredients, are the star attraction. Pick up a classic organic sourdough or opt for one of their contemporary concoctions like rye and caraway, olive and rosemary or choc macadamia.

A solid savoury selection includes minted pea, bean and ricotta sausage rolls, red lentil and dahl pie and leg ham and manchego cheese croissant.

And for your something sweet? We’re eyeing off the baked pear wattleseed and custard tart.

Flour of Life, Helensvale

Find it at 20 Siganto Drive, Helensvale

Plant lovers, rejoice. Vegans don’t have to miss out on bolognese pies, thanks to this purely vegan Helensvale bakery.

While you won’t find any animal products, you’ll be treated to maximum flavour. Fluffy meringues and pavlovas are made from chickpea brine, sunflower oil replaces butter and sweets are infused with dairy-free chocolate from local maker Cravve.

Join the hordes of loyal fans and stop by to sample – and marvel at – the culinary ingenuity. Topping our list is the basil scroll, gooey custard slice and mushroom pie.

Fuel Bakehouse, Currumbin

Find it at 44 Currumbin Creek Road, Currumbin Waters

Owner Ben Edwards wanted his bakery to be known for something other than bread. So he’s built up a reputation for some of the best pies, doughnuts and coffee in Currumbin (they’ve also just opened a new store in Cabarita). Think deep-dish beef pies slow cooked for seven hours. Chances are one serving won’t be enough, but don’t worry, you can take home a family pie for dinner.

Get in early to get your hands on one of the popular semi-sourdough salted caramel, Nutella or jam doughnuts.
