RACV welcomes ANCAP adoption of eCall technology for enhanced road safety

RACV has welcomed ANCAP's decision announced yesterday to include eCall technology in its safety assessment protocols, marking a significant advancement in vehicle safety standards for Australian motorists.

eCall, an in-vehicle crash detection system, will form part of ANCAP's 2026–2028 'post-crash' safety category within the new four 'Stages of Safety' scheme. The technology uses vehicle sensors and onboard telemetry to automatically detect crashes and transmit critical incident data and location information, enabling a faster emergency service response.

The technology is already supporting over 900,000 connected vehicles across Australia and New Zealand through RACV-owned provider Intelematics, servicing major brands including Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, and Genesis.

The timing is particularly significant for Victorian and Australian road users, with research suggesting eCall technology could prevent up to 200 fatalities and 2,500 serious injuries annually across the country.

"Two-thirds of Australian road fatalities occur in rural and remote areas, often involving single-car, high-speed crashes," said Katherine Anderson, Senior Product Manager at Intelematics.

"In these situations, time is critical, and having eCall may be the only chance of survival."

Since 2018, eCall has been mandatory for all new cars and light vans sold in the European Union, with adoption also progressing in Russia, the UAE, China and parts of North America. ANCAP's inclusion of the technology aligns Australian safety standards with international best practice.
