RACV issues summer warning after rescuing over 1,000 children and pets locked in cars

RACV is urging Victorians to keep their keys close and stay alert this summer, after responding to 1,109 lockout emergencies across the state since January.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s long range forecast for December to February 2026 is predicting above-average temperatures for summer, and RACV is reminding parents, carers and pet owners that it is never safe to leave a child or animal unattended in a vehicle.

Cabin temperatures can rise rapidly, often exceeding 70 degrees Celsius within minutes when the outside temperature is 30 degrees, putting children and animals at immediate risk of heat stress, dehydration and heatstroke.

RACV General Manager Automotive Services Makarla Cole said many of the lockout cases attended by RACV patrols are avoidable.

“Any call involving children or pets in danger is treated as top priority by RACV Emergency Roadside Assistance. RACV will respond as fast as possible, regardless of whether you’re a member or not,” Ms Cole said.

“Most incidents occur when keys are left in reach, handed to a child, or accidentally pressed by a pet. Simple precautions can prevent a dangerous and distressing situation. If the situation is life threatening, please call 000 immediately.”

RACV have recently expanded their RACV Emergency Roadside Assistance plan to allow you to have one plan for your household.

“RACV offers help 24/7 Australia-wide help for you and your family with roadside assist. Your plan can have up to five vehicles owned by your family and friends, and up to six drivers,” Ms Cole explained.

“This means drivers can receive help in any of their nominated vehicles and get a complimentary RACV Membership, saving time and hassle with just one plan, which can be easily managed online and via the RACV App.”

In the past year (as of 30 November 2025) RACV Emergency Roadside Assist has responded to:

  • 514 children were rescued from locked vehicles.
  • 595 animals were rescued from locked vehicles.

RACV urges motorists travelling with children or pets to:

  • Open windows before placing children or pets inside to prevent auto-locking.
  • Keep keys on their person using a clip or lanyard.
  • Avoid giving keys to children as a toy or distraction.
  • Minimise distractions when loading the car.
  • Always check the back seat before locking the vehicle.

If a child or pet is accidentally locked in the car:

  1. Stay calm, but act fast.
  2. For life-threatening situations, call 000 immediately.
  3. Call 13 11 11 for RACV Emergency Roadside Assistance.

RACV prioritises emergency lockouts and will attend as quickly as possible, regardless of whether you are an RACV member or not.
