RACV reveals most searched cars as fuel excise relief ends

With pressure at the bowser set to increase today when the Federal government's fuel excise ends, data reveals affordable electric vehicles continue to be the most searched cars on RACV Car Match. 

EVs by BYD and MG have claimed the top five spots for searches across RACV Car Match since the uncertainty around the fuel market began five months ago – reflecting the growth of affordable EV brands in the Australian new-car market.

The BYD Atto 1 came in at number one as most searched, with a price point starting at just under $28,000 drive away according to Car Match data. 

This was followed by BYD Atto 2 ($36,244 drive away), BYD Sealion 7 as a mid-sized SUV option ($60,210 drive away), BYD Dolphin ($31,611 drive away), while the MG4 ($30,777 drive away) landed in fifth position to round out the top five. 

It follows data released by the RACV earlier this year that searches for EVs increased by 461 per cent in March compared to February, coinciding with the news that China overtook Japan as Australia’s biggest source of new vehicles.

RACV Car Match was launched in 2025 as a tool to help Australians make confident, informed decisions when purchasing a car. It combines RACV's motoring expertise into a single platform where users can research, compare and evaluate vehicles.

RACV Head of Policy James Williams said the data from RACV Car Match pointed to a meaningful shift in what Australians were looking for when purchasing their next car. 

"Cost of living and a desire to find cheaper ways to stay on the road is top of mind for Australians, and we're seeing how that is changing our local car market and consumer preferences,” Mr Williams said.  

“Manufacturers such as BYD and MG have become major players in the Australian market as motorists increasingly prioritise value for money, technology and safety features with ongoing pressure at the bowser pushing more everyday Victorians to electric.”

Williams reminded motorists to do their research and understand the additional considerations that come with owning EV.
