RACV cautions holiday motorists amid regional increase in roadside call-outs

December 19, 2025

RACV is urging Victorian motorists to review their roadside assistance and insurance ahead of the busy summer holiday period.

Over December and January combined in 2024-25, RACV Emergency Roadside Assistance responded to more than 37,000 call-outs in regional Victoria – well above the monthly average.

RACV General Manager Automotive Services Makarla Cole said the surge in holiday travel often exposes gaps in motorists’ preparedness.

“High traffic volumes, long-distance driving and hotter conditions all contribute to a significant rise in vehicle breakdowns during the holiday season,” Ms Cole said.

RACV’s data shows that the most common summer call-outs include flat batteries, tyre damage, lockouts and mechanical faults exacerbated by heat and extended travel.

RACV Emergency Roadside Assist is trusted by 1.3 million Victorians and comes in three different packages – Roadside Care, Extra Care and Total Care.

RACV is encouraging motorists to check their roadside assistance and insurance policies before setting off, including:

  • How trailers, caravans, additional vehicles and drivers are covered
  • expired memberships or outdated payment details

“Taking 10 minutes to review your package now can save hours of delay and stress on the roadside,” Ms Cole said.

“Ensuring your vehicle is serviced, your motor insurance policy is current, and you understand what you’re covered for can make all the difference during the holiday rush.”

Motorists are also reminded to pack an emergency kit, allow extra travel time, and plan regular rest breaks.
