Victorians ditch overseas trips for local adventures as RACV slashes car hire costs

As more Australians choose to holiday closer to home this summer, RACV is helping members explore their own backyard for less – boosting its car hire member discount to up to 25 per cent off.

New data from the Tourism & Transport Forum reveals a surge in domestic travel plans, with 34 per cent of Australians aged 18 to 65 planning to holiday within their own state this summer. A further 25 per cent will travel interstate, while just 15 per cent are heading overseas.

RACV Executive General Manager Leisure Craig Peachey said the boosted discount arrives at the perfect time for Victorian families planning summer getaways.

"Aussies are rediscovering the incredible experiences on offer right here at home, and we're making it easier and more affordable for our members to explore," said Mr Peachey.

"With the enhanced discount, RACV members can now save up to 25 per cent off the rental car base rate for bookings of three days or more at participating Australian locations with Europcar.

"For a typical seven-day road trip, that could mean saving around $80 when hiring a standard vehicle – money that can go toward accommodation, experiences, or simply easing the pressure on the family budget," Mr Peachey said.

The enhanced discount applies to a wide range of vehicles perfect for Australian road trips – from fuel-efficient hatchbacks for coastal drives to spacious SUVs for family adventures and rugged 4WDs for outback exploration.

Mr Peachey said the timing reflects Victorians' changing holiday habits and desire to support local tourism.

"Whether it's the Great Ocean Road, the High Country, or exploring regional Victoria's hidden gems, our members have incredible destinations right on their doorstep.

"With international travel still expensive and many families watching their budgets carefully, we're seeing more people choose to road trip closer to home – and we want to make those trips as affordable as possible," Mr Peachey said.

Beyond the enhanced 25 per cent discount at participating Australian locations, RACV members also save up to 15 per cent on car hire with other major rental providers – both in Australia and overseas.
