About electrification
Electrification means replacing the gas appliances in your home with modern electric alternatives, often powered by renewable energy like solar. This can include:
- heat pump hot water systems
- split system heating and cooling
- induction cooktops
- rooftop solar and batteries
- electric vehicles and home charging.
Switching to an all-electric home is better for the environment, can help lower your energy bills and often makes your home healthier and more comfortable. By going electric, you’re also helping Victoria move towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
You don’t need to replace all your appliances at once. Some households electrify appliance by appliance, while others switch them all in one go. If you’re not ready to go fully electric yet, our team can help you decide where to start and create a pathway that fits your home, budget and timing.

Most homes use gas for hot water, heating and cooking, so these are usually the best places to start when electrifying your home.
- Hot water: Replacing a gas hot water system with an electric heat pump hot water system is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make. Heat pumps are highly efficient and use significantly less energy than traditional gas systems.
- Heating and cooling: Efficient electric systems like split system air conditioners can heat and cool your home. They’re far more energy efficient than gas heaters, provide better temperature control and can improve comfort year-round.
- Cooking: Gas stoves can be replaced with sleek, electric induction cooktops, which heat faster, are easier to clean and create a healthier indoor environment by removing gas from the kitchen.
- Solar and battery: While solar panels and batteries are not required to move away from gas, many households choose to add them to power their electric home with renewable solar energy and reduce reliance on the grid.
- Electric vehicle: An electric powered car can complete the transition to an all electric lifestyle. It can be cheaper and more convenient to charge at home, especially when using solar power, compared to refuelling a petrol or diesel car.

Once your home no longer uses gas, you may choose to disconnect your gas service. This removes the gas supply charge and means you’ll no longer receive a gas bill.
To disconnect gas, you’ll need to contact your gas retailer. They’ll arrange the disconnection with your local gas distributor, who is responsible for physically disconnecting the service. There is usually a one-off disconnection fee, sometimes up to a few hundred dollars. Your gas retailer or distributor can confirm the exact cost for your property.
If you’re unsure when to disconnect, or want help understanding the process, our team can guide you through the steps and answer any questions you have.

Your estimated bill savings are calculated by comparing your current gas costs with the estimated cost to run modern electric replacements, taking into account typical appliance performance data and current tariff assumptions.
The estimate uses:
- estimated electricity and gas usage based on your bill inputs
- the typical efficiency of gas appliances
- the efficiency of modern electric upgrades (such as hot water heat pumps)
- current electricity and gas tariff assumptions, including supply charges.
This allows the system to estimate how much your overall energy usage and annual running costs would change when switching from gas to modern electric appliances. If all gas appliances are replaced, the estimated savings also include the removal of the gas supply charge.

Your solar savings are estimated by looking at how much electricity a typical solar system could produce for your home, and how much grid electricity you’d otherwise buy that solar power could replace.
To do this, the calculation uses the information you share about your energy bills, the size of the solar system being considered and any existing solar on your home. It also factors in typical solar performance data for Victoria and how households usually use energy throughout the day.
This is used to estimate:
- how much solar energy your system could generate each year
- how much of that energy you’re likely to use in your home
- how much electricity you might export back to the grid
From this, your estimated savings are calculated based on the grid electricity you may avoid buying and any solar energy you may export.

Your battery savings are estimated by looking at how much solar energy your home could store and use later, instead of sending back to the grid. This means your battery could help you use more of your own solar power, for example in the evening, and reduce the amount of electricity you’d need to buy from the grid.
To estimate this, the calculation considers your energy bills, how much solar energy your home is likely to export, the size of the battery and typical household energy‑use patterns. From this, it estimates how much grid electricity the battery could replace and the potential savings that could result in.
