Toyota Australia has announced it will introduce its second EV, the Toyota bZ4x Touring SUV in the first half of 2026, sharing the first images of the new, larger vehicle.

The new bZ4x Touring model is an extended version of the brand’s first electric SUV, the Toyota bZ4x, which was introduced last year and competes against top-selling mid-size electric SUVs like the Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 6.

Toyota recently confirmed the bZ4x will be updated at the end of the year, with new features including a larger 74.7kWh lithium-ion battery, to increase driving range. While the bZ4x is available in both single and dual-motor variants, the new Touring model will be available exclusively as a more powerful 280kW dual-motor model with all-wheel drive, sharing the same larger battery for greater driving range.

Toyota bZ4x Touring design and specification

The Toyota bZ4x Touring is 140mm longer than the standard bZ4x and features a more upright tailgate, which combine to provide approximately 30 per cent greater luggage volume over the bZ4x.

The Touring variant is confirmed to carry a 'flagship' level of specification mirroring the greater level of features in the current bZ4x AWD model, and is expected to carry a larger price than the bZ4x which currently costs $74,900 plus on-road costs for the highest grade.

While full design details have not yet been shared, the bZ4X’s Touring will feature a full cabin redesign in common with the updated bZ4x, centred around a new 14.0-inch multimedia screen.

Further highlights include the updated lithium-ion battery, which has been designed with a pre-conditioning function to optimize the battery’s temperature for charging, targeting a rapid charging time of approximately 30 minutes.

Range and efficiency figures for the Toyota bZ4x Touring will be revealed closer to launch but the larger battery will give greater driving range than the current bZ4x which promises just 411km (WLTP) from the outgoing 71.4kWh power source.

Will Toyota offer more battery electric vehicles in Australia?

Sales of the current battery electric Toyota bZ4x are eclipsed by the Toyota RAV4 hybrid, Australia’s current best-selling vehicle.

However, Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the brand's multi-pathway approach, which offers a range of propulsion systems include electric vehicles, petrol-hybrids and diesels, would see a steady increase in the electric vehicles it introduces to Australian car buyers to meet customer demand.

"Our strategy is very different to the vast majority of other car companies in this multi pathway strategy. We've never deviated from it from day one. We believe electric vehicles will be an integral part of customer requirements in the future, but it was never going to happen overnight. It was going to take time."

Battery electric vehicles currently represent around 8 per cent of the total vehicle market, with the Toyota bZ4x shifting 299 units so far this year, compared to 17,610 Toyota RAV4 sales.

Further battery electric vehicles are expected from Toyota with at least one additional model expected before the end of 2026.

A larger rear end design equates to more room in the rear seat of the Toyota bZ4x Touring.
