RACV's top tips to keep more cash in your pocket at the petrol pump

At a time when many Victorians are keeping a close eye on petrol prices, RACV is sharing its top tips to keep more cash in your pocket – and you don't need to overhaul your life to do it.

By embracing a handful of simple habits, Victorian motorists could create some serious savings over the year, by making changes such as moderating your driving style to knowing exactly when to pounce at the bowser.

RACV Members are already benefitting from a 5 cents per litre discount on petrol and diesel at EG Ampol. Since late September 2025, more than 318,000 members have tapped into the benefit — saving a combined $1.8 million across 70 million litres of fuel.

RACV Motoring Editor Andrea Matthews says the wins are there for the taking.

"Fuel and vehicle running costs continue to add up for many households, but there are straightforward steps motorists can take to reduce these expenses," Ms Matthews said.

"Driving smoothly and avoiding heavy acceleration, maintaining your vehicle and being strategic about when and where you fill up can all contribute to significant savings across the year."

And it's not just about how you drive – it's about what you drive. RACV is encouraging motorists to ask themselves a question that could save them thousands: does my car actually suit my life?

"RACV is encouraging Victorians to look at the car you are driving and assess whether there are more efficient and adequate options out there. RACV Car Match is an excellent tool to find a car that suits your needs and budget, and you can compare over 36,000 vehicles dating back 15 years including almost 2000 current model cars.

“It’s also worth asking yourself, do I absolutely have to drive? Public transport, walking or riding a bike should always be considered for people where these alternative modes of transport are a genuine option." Ms Matthews said.

The tool lets consumers compare vehicles on upfront and ongoing costs, including estimated fuel expenses for petrol, diesel, hybrids or electric vehicles, and indicative servicing costs – handy for anyone eyeing their next set of wheels, whether its new or used

On the maintenance front, the basics still matter: correctly inflated tyres, wheel alignment and regular servicing will help chip away at fuel bills while helping drivers avoid bigger repair costs down the track.

The RACV Member fuel discount – available once per day for up to 150 litres – is accessible through the RACV App.
