RACV reveals top 10 single items stolen in Victoria

As Victorians enter the busy shopping season, RACV has revealed that high-tech items likely to be sitting under Christmas trees this year such as laptops, tablets and mobile phones are in the top 10 most reported stolen items across the state.

In the financial year ending June 2017, RACV members made $2.2 million worth of contents insurance claims for theft of laptops, cameras, mobile phones and tablets. Following jewellery and hand tools, the third most stolen item overall was laptops, with a total claim value of almost $1 million. Tablets, digital cameras and mobile phones also appeared in the top 10, coming in at 5th, 6th, and 8th respectively.

“Australians are tipped to spend a collective $11 billion on Christmas presents this year, which means a lot of brand new items in households across Victoria in 2018,” notes Stacey Maher, RACV General Manager, Home Insurance.

This week, RACV launched Single Item Insurance, one of the first insurers to do so in Australia. RACV Single Item Insurance covers individual items such as laptops, tablets, phones and gaming consoles for as little as $25 a year. Cover includes theft from the home, and damage and loss due to fire, storm, cyclone and flood.

“Our data shows that in the last financial year there were 2,500 consumer electrical items stolen. This data shows that incidents of theft are far more common than many of us like to believe. RACV Single Item Insurance is designed to meet the needs of modern consumers and deliver a seamless, simple and flexible insurance solution,” continues Ms Maher.

Optional cover protects against theft anywhere in Australia and accidental damage including knocks, drops and spills. It encompasses 10 categories, including consumer electrical goods, gaming devices, musical instruments and furniture. The average Victorian can insure a laptop from just $2.37 a week.

“Younger generations, and those who live in share houses, don’t generally want to invest in home and contents insurance. But, RACV Single Item Insurance means they can protect the items they can’t live without for little more than the cost of a movie ticket each month. Consumers can go online, select what cover they’d like, and get a quote in under 30 seconds,” says Ms Maher.
