Australia’s best-selling SUV, the Toyota RAV4, is set for a crucial update following confirmation that a plug-in hybrid version of the popular medium SUV will be added to the range in the first half of 2026.
2025 Mitsubishi Outlander preview: price, specs and release date in Australia

Mitsubishi has refreshed its popular Outlander mid-size SUV for 2025, introducing updated technology, enhanced safety features, and improved driving dynamics. But will these changes be enough to keep it competitive in Australia’s increasingly crowded family medium SUV market?
Currently the third best-selling SUV of 2025 behind the Toyota RAV4 and Toyota Landcruiser Prado, the Mitsubishi Outlander will be upgraded later this year to keep it competitive in the burgenoning medium SUV segment that features new arrivals including the BYD Sealion 7 and MG HS Super Hybrid, and next year’s new-generation Toyota RAV4 PHEV.
The Mitsubishi Outlander will continue to be available in five and seven-seat options, with pricing for the 2025 model year vehicles ranging from $39,990 to $57,990 plus on-road costs.
Specification and pricing for plug-in hybrid versions of the updated Outlander are expected to be announced by Mitsubishi soon.
In addition to a boosted sound system, additional vehicle technology and safety updates, Mitsubishi says significant upgrades have been made to the on-road feel of the Outlander through changes to some of its suspension components, recalibrated shock absorbers and a new steering tune for its electric power steering system. It says the ride is further enhanced by a new Bridgestone tyre fitted to the 2025 Outlander range.

2025 Mitsubishi Outlander design and technology
The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander range has undergone design changes that Mitsubishi says improve both aesthetics and functionality. The exterior design has been streamlined and refined, with updates to the front and rear bumper sections and lower garnish, creating a modern look while improving aerodynamics.
The lighting has also been upgraded, with rear combination lamps featuring a 'smoke' clear outer lens and a 'black tone' inner, and LED rear turn lamps and reverse lamps. The side profile benefits from updated wheel designs, with 18-inch wheels on ES and LS models, and a 20-inch design fitted to Aspire, Exceed, and Exceed Tourer models.
Additionally, the interior has been redesigned to enhance driver and passenger comfort, with premium materials and improved ergonomics. More padding has been added to the second row to deliver greater support, which is welcomed as it is one of the criticisms we had from rear seat passengers when driving the previous generation Outlander.
Audiophiles will appreciate an upgraded sound system. Outlander model variants ES through to Exceed are equipped with a premium Yamaha system, featuring eight speakers. This two-way system features rear speakers that integrate woofers and tweeters into a single unit to accommodate a wider range of sound.
A premium Yamaha Ultimate system featuring a 12-speaker layout is available exclusively on the Exceed Tourer, and is inspired by Yamaha’s flagship NS-5000 speaker. Drivers can choose from four distinct ‘sound modes’: lively, signature, powerful and relaxing. In total, the system offers amplified power of 1650 watts.
Mitsubishi debuts new e-Call safety functionality
The updated Outlander range introduces several new technologies for the first time on Mitsubishi vehicles, all aimed at improving safety and convenience.
Mitsubishi Connect debuts in the LS grade and above, featuring key safety and security services such as e-Call, Automatic Collision Notification, Breakdown Assistance, Anti-theft Notification, Curfew Alert, Geo-fence Alert, Speed Alert, and Tow-away Notification.
The system also includes remote and convenience services like Remote Climate Sync, Remote Seat and Steering Wheel Heater, Remote Light/Horn operation, Remote Door Lock/Unlock, Door Lock Reminder, Vehicle Finder, Distance Tracker, Destination Send-to-Car, and Navigation to final destination.
The new 12.3-inch infotainment system promises higher resolution and an enhanced response rate. Wireless Apple CarPlay carries over, while wireless Android Auto debuts in the Outlander range.
Vehicle safety is enhanced with the introduction of refinements to the haptic brake warning, blind spot intervention and lane departure prevention systems.
Key safety technology and driver assistance systems include:
- Driver Monitoring System
- Camera-linked rear automatic braking
