Overview

A joint policy allows:

  • multiple people and businesses to be covered under the one policy
  • everyone listed to update the policy and make claims.

To have a joint policy, you must share financial interest in what’s insured with someone else.

Financial interest means you:

  • own or partly own an asset
  • have a personal stake in maintaining and protecting an asset.

If you don’t have financial interest, you can still be listed as an additional insured or authorised user.

Manage your policy 24/7

Check and update your policy and payment details anywhere, anytime in the RACV App or online.

Being jointly listed

You could be on a joint policy if you share ownership of an asset (like a home or car) with someone else.

Spouses and partners

You’re jointly listed with your spouse or partner on the insurance policy for your family home.

Parents and children

You help your child buy their first car and want to maintain part ownership.

Business associates

You run a business with your friend and you both want to be able to manage the business insurance policy.

The different policy roles

You can be on a joint policy without being a co-owner or joint policyholder. Here are the main roles and their responsibilities.

Policyholders

Sole and joint policyholders (or their authorised representatives) are responsible for ensuring that the policy remains active. Only they can:

  • make policy changes
  • renew or cancel the policy
  • make a claim.

Billers

The biller is the person responsible for paying the insurance premiums. This could be:

  • a policyholder, or
  • someone authorised by a policyholder.

Paying the premium doesn’t grant policy control.

Additional drivers

Under a car insurance policy, owners can have additional drivers on their policy. This doesn’t mean the driver is jointly listed on the policy – they can’t change, renew or cancel a policy, and they’re not entitled to a refund.

Joint policy addresses

All policyholders have equal rights to access policy documents, renewal notices and cancellation letters, regardless of who pays the premium. These documents generally include a mailing, product and risk address.

As a policyholder, you’re able to update these addresses online or over the phone. If you list a new address, it’ll be visible to all policyholders unless you request privacy protection.

It’s important to review the information you’re sharing regularly.

Mailing address

We send documents and other communications to this address. Even if we usually email you, it’s important to know that we still have a physical address for you and it’s often your home address.

Product address

Your product address is where your insured product is located. For a car, this is where you usually park it and for a home, this is your property address.

Risk address

The risk address is the actual location that RACV Insurance uses to work out your premium. This is often the same as the product address.

Communication methods

You can choose how we contact you and it doesn’t need to be the same as others on the policy.

Online

Enjoy easy access to your policy on the RACV App or in your online account.

Email and SMS

Get your documents as quick as you can by signing up for eDocs, and we’ll email you all of your policy communications and alert you when something changes by SMS.

Post

Don’t want to go digital? That’s okay, we can send you your documents at no extra cost.

Communication preferences

Your preferences affect how we send you your documents and who we send them to. To change yours, go to Communication preferences.

Regardless of who we send the documents to, you’ll always be able to find policy documents in your online account.

Only email selected

When all joint policyholders select email, we’ll email policy documents to everyone.

Email and post selected

If one joint policyholder selects email, we won’t post out any policy documents (even when other policyholders have post as their communication method).

Only post selected

When all joint policyholders select post, we’ll post out policy documents to the person identified as the member with the mailing role.

Policy cancellations

When you cancel your joint policy, we send all policyholders the cancellation letter via their communication method.

Making changes to a joint policy

You can manage your joint policy in all the same ways as you can if you were the sole policyholder, with one main difference – generally all policyholders will need to agree to the changes.

If you have safety and other concerns around speaking directly with your co-owners, you can:

  • Talk with your co-workers

It’s important to agree on what’s changing (like address, coverage, payments) and who’ll make the changes.

  • Organise your documents

For some changes, you’ll need proof of ownership (if changing the insured asset) and signed consent from all policyholders or court documents (for major changes).

  • Action your changes

You can make most changes in the RACV App or in your online account. For some changes, you’ll need to call 13 72 28.

Changes you can make

Unless you’re making minor updates (like your personal information) you’ll need to follow the steps for making changes to a joint policy.

Updating personal information

Like your mailing address, contact details and communication preferences. You don’t need consent for minor updates (like a phone number).

Updating an insured asset

Like adding or removing a car, updating your home details after a renovation. You’ll need consent and proof of ownership for these changes.

Removing someone from a policy

You can remove someone (including yourself) from a policy.

If you need, we can talk to you about protecting your interest in the asset when you call.

Cancelling a policy and requesting a refund

Refunds are typically paid to the billing account unless split by written agreement or in situations of family and domestic violence. Read our family and domestic violence support options
