Frequently asked questions

Annual multi-trip travel insurance could be worth it if you travel multiple times a year. Rather than buying a separate policy for each trip, one annual policy covers every trip you take over 12 months, which can save the hassle of arranging cover each time you go.

A few factors that can make multi-trip cover a better choice:

  • Number of trips: The more you travel, the better value an annual policy becomes.
  • Destinations: If you regularly travel to similar destinations, you don’t need to reprice cover each time.
  • Trip length: Annual multi-trip policies are designed for shorter, more frequent trips.
  • Admin savings: No need to obtain a new quote or purchase travel insurance each time you travel.

It's worth comparing the cost of an annual policy against what you'd typically spend on single-trip cover over a year, factoring in the trips you're planning and their length.

For frequent travellers, RACV Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance covers unlimited domestic and international trips more than 250km from home and of up to 30, 45 or 60 days per trip (depending on the option you choose) for a single annual premium.# RACV Members also save 15%.*

The cost of annual travel insurance varies depending on a number of factors, from your age to intended destinations. For RACV Annual Multi-Trip Travel insurance, these factors include:

  • Your destinations: The countries and regions you plan to visit are one of the biggest factors in how your premium is calculated.
  • Traveller ages: Premiums typically increase with age.
  • Trip duration limit: Whether you choose 30, 45 or 60-day trip limits affects the overall cost.
  • Number of travellers: Cover is available for up to 2 adults, with automatic cover for dependants aged 25 and under.++
  • Optional extras: Adding cruise or winter sports cover will increase the cost of your policy.
  • Excess choice: Choosing a lower excess means a higher premium.
  • Medical conditions: RACV covers 38 medical conditions automatically on overseas trips.~ Medical conditions that require assessment may attract an additional premium.

The best way to find out what you'll pay is to get a quote – it only takes a few minutes. RACV Members save 15%.*

There's generally no limit on the number of trips you can take under an annual multi-trip policy, although each individual trip may have a day limit, depending on your level of cover.

Typically, each time you complete a trip your benefit limits automatically reset for the next one, so there's no need to notify your insurer or arrange anything between trips.

RACV Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance provides cover for multiple trips taken within a 12-month policy period, as long as each individual trip falls within your chosen limit of 30, 45 or 60 days.# Cover is available for both international and domestic trips more than 250km from home. RACV Members save 15%.*

Annual multi-trip travel insurance policies can vary in features, benefits, limits and eligibility requirements. When comparing policies, you may wish to consider:

  • How often you travel: Annual multi-trip cover can help you save time if you're taking multiple trips a year.
  • Where you're going: Make sure you list all destinations you are planning to visit including any stopover countries.
  • How long your trips are: Choose a trip duration limit — typically 30, 45 or 60 days — that comfortably covers your longest planned trip.
  • What you're doing: If you're planning to ski or cruise on your travels, you may need additional cover.
  • Who's travelling with you: Check how dependants are covered and up to what age.
  • Your health: If you have existing medical conditions, check what's automatically covered and what may need to be declared.
  • Your budget: Consider the excess level that works for you. A lower excess usually means a higher premium.

RACV Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance is available with optional cruise cover** and winter sports cover. Policy holders can also select from available trip duration, excess and cancellation limit options. RACV Members save 15%.*

Yes, annual multi-trip insurance generally covers both international travel and domestic trips on the same policy.

It's worth noting that domestic travel usually doesn't include medical cover, as that benefit applies to international travel only. For Australian trips, help is available for things like cancellation, travel delays, luggage, rental car excess and personal liability.

RACV Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance covers both international travel and domestic trips within Australia, provided each domestic trip is more than 250km from your home.# RACV Members save 15% when they purchase a policy.*

It's important to make sure all your destinations are listed on your policy before you travel, including any countries you're stopping over in for more than 24 hours. Travelling to an unlisted destination could affect your cover.

If your plans have changed, contact RACV as soon as possible to update your policy. Depending on the destination, there may be a change to your premium. You can reach RACV on 13 13 29 or at care@racv.com.au.

In short, it depends on the type of cruise you’re taking:

  • River cruises: Both international and domestic river cruises are usually covered automatically under a standard travel insurance policy.
  • Ocean cruises: If you spend more than one night on the sea or ocean, you'll typically need specific cruise cover, even if the cruise is taking place in Australian waters.

You can add Cruise Benefits to your RACV Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy which includes cover for onboard medical expenses, cabin confinement, missed ports and more.# RACV Members save 15% off the total premium.*

Cover ceases at the end of your chosen trip duration limit – 30, 45 or 60 days with RACV Travel Insurance, depending on your level of cover – so any days beyond that limit wouldn't be covered.# Unlike Single Trip policies, Annual Multi-Trip policies can't be extended once you've departed.

The one exception is if your trip is delayed or prolonged due to a reason that's covered under your policy, such as an unexpected medical event. In those circumstances, cover can continue for as long as is reasonably necessary at no extra cost.

The simplest approach is to choose a trip duration limit that comfortably covers your longest planned trip before you travel.

Yes, most annual multi-trip travel insurance policies are available to older travellers, though age limits and conditions vary between insurers.

For travellers with existing medical conditions, many common conditions are automatically covered, and others can be assessed individually. An additional premium may apply depending on the outcome of that assessment.

RACV Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance is available to travellers up to 75 years of age, with cover for 38 medical conditions included automatically.~ RACV Members also save 15%, regardless of age.*
