The way we were: Driving certificates

RACV RoyalAuto magazine

From 1906, RACV issued an early form of driving licence to competent drivers over the age of 16.

Licences weren’t required by the government until 1910, so the certificates issued by the Club prior to that date were the only independent proof of driving ability available.

Car owners didn’t require such a certificate, but professional drivers did and chauffeurs and commercial drivers valued the Club certificate as it helped them gain employment.
