Whether it's a lunchtime treat, after school snack or enjoyed while you watch your favourite sporting match, the sausage roll is an Aussie favourite and a mainstay in many homes across the country. 

Before this year's Grand Final, if you can't go out to the pub, why not take the time to make your own delicious sausage rolls to enjoy during that first goal? 

These sausage rolls are always bound to score a goal with a surefire recipe from RACV's Le Petit Gateau Executive Pastry Chef Amit Sinha.

Ingredients

  • Puff Pastry Sheets
  • 1 kg Sausage Mince
  • 1 Medium Brown Onion, finely diced
  • 1 Medium Carrot, finely grated
  • 1 Medium Zucchini, finely grated
  • 3 Cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 Eggs
  • 30g Tomato Paste
  • 50ml BBQ Sauce
  • 40ml Worcestershire Sauce
  • 75g Breadcrumbs
  • 80g Parmesan Cheese
  • 15g Fresh Parsley, chopped
  • Black Pepper - to taste
  • Sea Salt Flakes - to taste
  • Sesame Seeds, to sprinkle on top

Method

  1. Place diced onion, grated carrot, grated zucchini and garlic in the large bowl. Pour over the tomato paste, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire sauce and egg. Add in salt and pepper. Give it all a thorough mix with a whisk until everything is combined.
  2. Add in the mince, mix with the vegetables together. Sprinkle over the breadcrumbs, cheese and parsley and keep mixing until it all comes together.
  3. Cut the pastry sheets in half or third, depending on the size.
  4. Arrange the mince mix in a log shape along the center of each pastry sheet. Brush one long side of pastry with the egg and roll up to enclose filling.
  5. Cut each giant sausage roll into two normal sized ones, or six party sized rolls. Place seam side down on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Make sure each roll is at least 3cm apart so the pastry will puff properly.
  6. Egg wash each sausage roll and sprinkle on sesame seeds. 
  7. Put the sausage rolls in the preheated oven and bake at 190C for 30-35 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown.
