New turbo-petrol MG7 brings a sporting flavour to the family passenger car segment, where the Toyota Camry Hybrid and BYD Seal EV dominate sales.

The rapid expansion of the MG range in Australia continues with the 2026 MG7 family fastback sedan now available to order.

A spiritual successor to the MG ZT from two decades past – before the British brand came under Chinese ownership – the new-age 2026 MG7 is a sleek, sporting turbo-petrol mid-size family car that provides a traditional combustion-engined alternative to the top-selling Toyota Camry Hybrid and BYD Seal EV.

The MG7 also lines up against the Hyundai Sonata, Honda Accord, Skoda Octavia and the forthcoming electric Mazda 6e, all of which must fight for buyers’ attention amid a sea of SUVs.

Does the MG7 have what it takes to cut through? This guide will help you decide.

When does the MG7 go on sale in Australia?

The MG7 is now on sale in Australia ahead of first customer deliveries early in 2026.

How much does the MG7 cost?

The 2026 MG7 is available in a single, highly specified Essence model grade priced from $44,990 plus on-road costs. That translates to $48,739 drive-away for Victorian private buyers, which places the MG7 above the Skoda Octavia Sportline (from $46,490 d/a) and Toyota Camry Hybrid Ascent Sport (from 47,805 d/a) – and brings the electric BYD Seal Dynamic (from $50,412.90 d/a) into the equation too.

It looks a bargain against the Hyundai Sonata N Line (from $61,202.10 d/a) and Honda Accord RS Hybrid (from $64,900 d/a), but value lies in much more than a dollar figure, so check out what’s on offer across the class.

If you’re set on an alternative powertrain, note that the MG IM5 is also available from $60,990 drive-away.

The MG7 Essence has a lot of equipment packed in, leaving the major options as paint colours and interior trim. Emerald Green metallic is standard, but opting for Pearl White, Diamond Red, Black Pearl or Andes Grey adds $695. You can get a Peacock Green or dual Black & Red interior for no extra cost, while Bordeaux Red trim adds another $695.

As with all new MG cars sold in Australia, the MG7 is covered by a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre factory warranty, extendable to 10 years/250,000km (whichever comes first) if all scheduled services are completed within MG’s authorised dealer network as per the specified logbook intervals (likely to be every 12 months/10,000km). At the time of writing, MG had not confirmed service intervals or capped price servicing costs for the MG7.

2026 MG7 design and specification

The 2026 MG7 is meant to be a statement piece, and the sleek and sporting fastback design is sure to draw attention from onlookers.

There’s no Ford Mustang-sourced V8 under the bonnet, as with its rear-drive MG ZT ancestor, but the front-drive MG7 still has aggressive overtones with its low stance, sloping contoured bonnet, wide grille, adaptive three-stage electric rear spoiler, quad exhaust pipes and 19-inch star-shaped alloy wheels with low-profile 245/40-section Michelin rubber. Red brake callipers front and rear and frameless doors are also noted.

The MG7 measures 4884mm long, 1889mm wide and 1447mm high, resting on a 2778mm wheelbase. Ground clearance is 135mm. The MG7 is a little smaller overall than the Camry, although the MG is 49mm wider as part of its dynamic emphasis.

To that end, the MG7 suspension comprises MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link configuration at the rear, with electronically controlled adaptive dampers. There’s also an electronic limited-slip differential, variable steering ratio, front/rear (ventilated/solid) disc brakes, transmission paddle shifters, electronic exhaust sound generator, custom driving modes and driving data displays.

The headlights, daytime running lights and full-width tail-lights are all LED, with the slimline front lamps offering auto high beam, dusk sensing and follow-me-home lighting features.

The cabin makes good use of soft-touch materials, while opting for the Bordeaux Red interior brings Alcantara seat trim with artificial “PU leather” (polyurethane) for the bolsters, as well as microfibre roof lining. Leather trim is used on the standard car for the seats, steering wheel and gear selector.

Opening the power-operated tailgate reveals a cargo area that can hold 375 litres with the rear seats upright, extending to 1040L with the 60/40-split seats folded. A space-saver spare tyre is used.

Towing capacity is restricted to 750kg, whether trailer brakes are fitted or not.

What powers the new MG7?

The 2026 MG7 is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 170kW of power at 5500-6000rpm and 380Nm of torque from 2500-3500rpm.

These figures are down on the outputs for this engine found in overseas markets, such as the Middle East where the MG7 produces a sportier 184kW/405Nm.

The 2.0T runs on 95 RON premium unleaded and drives the front wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. The MG7 tips the scales at 1647kg (tare), but MG hasn’t provided official acceleration times.

The official combined-cycle fuel consumption claim is 8.0L/100km, rising to 11.6L/100km on the city cycle and dropping to 5.9L/100km on the highway.

What safety and technology features on the MG7?

The 2026 MG7 has received a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating, based on 2025 testing protocols. This included an 81 per cent score in the Safety Assist assessment criteria, which reflects the comprehensive range of active safety technologies fitted standard. These include:

  • Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian, cyclist and motorcyclist detection
  • Front cross traffic alert, rear cross traffic braking
  • Lane keep assist with emergency intervention
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Intelligent speed assistance incl. speed sign recognition
  • Blind spot detection
  • Driver monitoring system
  • Door open warning

The MG7 comes with seven airbags: dual front, side chest-protecting, side head-protecting (front/rear) and a centre airbag between the front occupants. The outboard rear positions have seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters, as well as ISOFIX child restraint anchor points. Three child seat top tether strap points are also provided across the rear bench.

The broader tech suite on the MG7 includes connected services via MG’s iSmart app that allows for remote vehicle monitoring and a degree of remote control, such as door lock/unlock and cabin temperature. It does not include automatic collision notification and emergency call (eCall).

The 12.3-inch colour infotainment touchscreen operates in conjunction with wireless smartphone connectivity (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), Bluetooth, inbuilt satellite navigation and a 360-degree camera. Five USB ports are provided (two front/rear and a fifth in the rearview mirror for a dash-cam), plus a 12V power outlet up front too.
