You can now buy an EV for $25,000 and there’s a wide range of electric cars and SUVs for less than $45K from BYD, MG, GWM, Chery and other brands. Here are the cheapest EVs to buy in Australia right now.
2026 Subaru Uncharted: price, specs and release date in Australia
The Subaru Uncharted small SUV has arrived as the brand’s cheapest EV while sticking to its charter of all-wheel-drive performance with a dual-motor electric powertrain. Here’s everything you need to know.
The 2026 Subaru Uncharted small SUV is now on sale in Australia, bolstering Subaru’s electric vehicle ranks as the Japanese brand sharpens its EV prices across the board in a bid to capitalise on the fast-growing electric car segment.
The new Uncharted is an electric alternative to the Subaru Crosstrek and sits below the Subaru Solterra medium SUV (an EV alternative to Forester) and the Subaru Trailseeker medium-large SUV (similar to the petrol Outback) – both of which have just received price cuts to now start from $61,990 and $63,990 plus on-road costs respectively.
The Subaru Uncharted is only slightly cheaper at $59,990 plus on-road costs, reflecting its 255kW dual-motor/all-wheel drive powertrain, handy 520km-plus (WLTP) range and a high specification. That makes it far more expensive than the BYD Atto 2, Jaecoo J5 EV and other affordable small electric SUVs but it does offer a solid alternative to top-spec versions of high-profile EVs such as the Kia EV3 and Zeekr X.

When does the 2026 Subaru Uncharted go on sale in Australia?
Order books have now opened for the 2026 Subaru Uncharted in Australia, following the release of local pricing and specifications. First deliveries are expected around mid-year.
How much does the Subaru Uncharted cost?
The 2026 Subaru Uncharted is only available as a single, high-spec, long-range, dual-motor/AWD variant priced from $59,990 plus on-road costs. That translates to a drive-away price for Victorian private buyers of $65,564 without options.
This puts the Uncharted well above the most affordable small electric SUVs in Australia, including the BYD Atto 2, Chery E5, Leapmotor B10, MG S5 and GWM Ora 5 – all of which start below (or close to) $40,000 drive-away.
Instead, Subaru’s latest EV stands as a fresh competitor for the likes of the Zeekr X Performance AWD (from $57,900 drive-away in Victoria), Hyundai Kona Electric Premium N Line (from $64,990 drive-away), Kia EV3 GT-Line (from $68,490 drive-away) and the Volvo EX30 Cross Country AWD (from $69,787 drive-away).
Subaru Uncharted buyers can choose from a five-strong exterior colour palette – Cosmic White Pearl and Attitude Black Mica (both no extra cost), as well as three metallic options: Cement Grey, Mineral and Flare Orange (all $660). There’s a panoramic glass roof option for an extra $1200, which also opens up the ability to specify a two-tone body colour (black roof) for another $1200.
Service intervals for the Uncharted are set at every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first. Three-year/45,000km and five-year/75,000km capped-price servicing plans are available, respectively costing $548.29 and $984.18 in total.
The Uncharted is covered by Subaru’s five-year/unlimited-kilometre factory warranty, while the high-voltage battery warranty is based on an eight-year/160,000km term.

Dual digital screens and conventional switchgear combine in the high-spec 2026 Subaru Uncharted.
2026 Subaru Uncharted design and specification
As per the related Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X, the 2026 Subaru Uncharted was developed in collaboration with Toyota and is based on the same EV architecture (dubbed e-Subaru Global Platform or e-TNGA). This will also underpin the forthcoming 2027 Toyota C-HR BEV due in Australia next year.
In keeping with Subaru’s AWD mantra, the Uncharted is only available with a dual-motor powertrain that provides all-wheel drive. The SUV also has a useful 211mm ground clearance, dual-mode X-Mode system with grip control, downhill assist control and a multi-terrain monitor, all pointing to its potential to manage mild off-road driving conditions.
The five-door, five-seat Uncharted has a fastback-inspired design with a sloping roofline and measures 4535mm long, 1870mm wide and 1625mm in overall height, making it slightly bigger overall than the Subaru Crosstrek.
The Uncharted is fitted standard with large 20-inch alloy wheels with 235/50R20 tyres, which rules out space for a spare wheel in the cargo area and will also make for expensive replacement tyres. A tyre repair kit is provided in the event of a puncture.
Suspension hardware comprises MacPherson struts up front and a double-wishbone configuration at the rear. Ventilated disc brakes are used at all four corners and electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering allows for an 11.0m turning circle.
Even without accommodating a spare wheel, the cargo area has a modest 403-litre capacity with the 60/40-split folding rear seats in the upright position. For comparison, the Kia EV3 luggage capacity is 460 litres.
In the passenger compartment, the seats are upholstered in black synthetic leather trim and the EV’s high spec level extends to creature comforts such as heating for both front and rear seating positions. Air vents for rear seat occupants are also provided with the dual-zone climate-control air-conditioning, and USB-C charging points extend to the back seat, too.
See the next section in this guide for details on standard equipment and features, but overall there’s a modern aesthetic in the Uncharted cabin with a blend of mod-cons – dual digital screens among them – and practical elements, including conventional switchgear.

What is the power and range of the Subaru Uncharted?
With strong connections to the Subaru Solterra mid-size SUV, the smaller 2026 Subaru Uncharted EV has two electric motors – one at each axle – that provide all-wheel drive and a combined power output of 252kW. No combined torque figure is provided, but the front e-motor develops 167kW/268Nm and the rear produces 88kW/169Nm.
Subaru claims the Uncharted, which weighs a hefty 2025kg (tare), can accelerate from 0-100km/h in about 5.0 seconds.
A 74.7kWh CATL lithium-ion battery delivers a driving range of up to 522km on the WLTP combined test cycle, according to Subaru, while energy consumption is listed at 16.0kWh/100km (WLTP). The driver can also select between Eco, Normal and Sport modes and use paddles on the steering wheel to adjust regenerative braking levels.
The battery can handle DC rapid charging up to a 150kW output, at which point Subaru says the power pack can be recharged from 0-80% in approximately 30 minutes. With AC charging using a dedicated home EV charger, the Uncharted accommodates both single-phase (7kW) and three-phase (up to 22kW) power supply. On single-phase, the EV needs about 12 hours to fully replenish the battery (0-100%), while on three-phase that drops to around four hours.
The Uncharted also has Vehicle to Load (V2L) capability with a 220V/1500W power outlet onboard, allowing you to tap into the high-voltage battery to run or recharge small electronic appliances.
