Which carmakers have the best new car warranties in Australia? We cover the new vehicle warranty for 70 brands, plus high-voltage battery warranties for EVs and hybrid cars, and more.

New vehicle warranties have become a key selling point for car companies operating in Australia, providing buyers with a crucial point of difference between the brands as well as important peace of mind when making such a big investment.

This is especially relevant as new and relatively unknown carmakers from China and other countries enter the Australian market, which in turn has prompted some well-established brands to increase their warranty offering to remain competitive.

Sometimes the headline warranty period is conditional on servicing your car through a brand’s dealer network – limiting its appeal for many buyers – while separate warranties provided for the high-voltage battery in hybrid electric (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV) also differ between brands.

In this guide, we cover the permanent new vehicle warranty and high-voltage battery warranty (where applicable) for carmakers selling new passenger cars, SUVs, utes and other light commercial vehicles in Australia. Information presented here is for private usage given cars used for commercial purposes, such as ride sharing, often have tighter conditions.

This comprehensive overview of the Australian car market will help you find the best warranty as we rank the brands with the longest warranties on offer in Australia and provide a detailed A-Z guide for 70 brands, from Abarth through to Zeekr and those in between.

Best new car warranties – what to look for

All car manufacturers and their distributors in Australia have detailed warranty provisions in place for their new vehicles that are in addition to the statutory rights and remedies available to buyers under Australian Consumer Law.

In general, the best new car warranties have:

  • a long term – 5 years is now widespread, but some brands are higher (eg. 7, 8 or 10 years)
  • unlimited kilometres rather than a mileage limit that may not meet your average annual distance travelled
  • long high-voltage battery cover for EV, plug-in hybrid and regular hybrid cars – 8 years or 160,000km (whichever comes first) is common, but some brands are lower and others higher (eg. 10 years with unlimited kilometres).

It pays to study the warranty terms and conditions closely, because these may include unexpected details, such as:

  • different provisions between a brand’s BEV, PHEV and HEV models
  • different terms for light commercial vehicles versus passenger cars and SUVs
  • a requirement that every service during the warranty period may need to be carried out at an authorised dealer rather than an independent workshop
  • strict adherence to intervals for each service, with little or no extra time or distance from the scheduled service
  • detailed instructions on what constitutes “correct charging procedures” for BEVs and PHEVs
  • different provisions for high-voltage battery capacity degradation versus battery components
  • no more than two years or 40,000km for the car’s standard 12-volt battery
  • various exclusions based on driver practices – eg. track day driving, commercial use (including ride sharing), and how an EV or hybrid car is stored when not in use.

The longest new car warranties in Australia

The longest new vehicle warranties in Australia currently extend to 10 years but are conditional on being strictly serviced in accordance with the logbook (including correct intervals) through that brand’s dealer network or other authorised service centres – right from the first service, not once the standard warranty period ends. If this is not adhered to, the default standard warranty will apply – and may not be as good as what’s on offer elsewhere.

Also watch out for other conditions with what at first glance might appear to be the best new car warranties, such as less generous terms for certain vehicle types or powertrains.

Nissan warranty – 10 years, 300,000km
