Frequently asked questions
1. Stop your car in a safe location
If one of your tyres go flat while you’re driving, put your hazard lights on and find a safe place to stop. If you can, try to move as far to the left as possible so the road is clear for other drivers.
2. Move to a safe space
Once you’ve parked, turn off your ignition but keep your hazard lights on. If you’re a safe distance from traffic, stay inside the vehicle with your seatbelt on while you wait for help. If your car is in a dangerous spot close to traffic, exit through the front passenger door and stand as far away from the road as possible.
If your car breaks down in the middle of traffic and you can't get your vehicle off the road, call VicRoads’ Incident Response Service on 13 11 70 for immediate help. For more information, visit VicRoad’s website.
3. Call roadside assistance for help
Once you’re safe, call roadside assistance. You can get help from RACV’s experts by calling 13 11 11 or requesting help in the RACV App.
4. Help arrives
Our roadside assistance expert will usually be there within the hour. They’ll ask you questions and run diagnostic tests to find out what’s wrong with your vehicle.
If your car can’t be fixed on the spot, we’ll help get it towed to a repairer and get a taxi for you.

RACV’s roadside experts can help with your flat tyre on private property or on any public road in Victoria, as long as our patrol vans can get there. This means the road has to be accessible to a normal 2-wheel drive vehicle.
We won’t be able to help in areas our patrol vans can’t get to, including open fields, beaches, recreation ovals, and logging or forest service roads.
