RACV Pet Insurance FAQs

General questions

How much is RACV Pet Insurance?

We calculate what you pay based on your pet’s age, breed, excess chosen and other factors. Some animals are more at-risk of developing certain conditions than others, so we take this into consideration when we price your premium.

The best way to find out how much RACV Pet Insurance is for your pet is to complete a quote online or call us on 1300 884 849.

Can I see any veterinarian?

We know you want to feel confident your pet’s getting the best medical treatment which is why you’ve got the freedom to choose the best vet for your pet. So long as they’re currently working and licenced in Australia and willing to provide you with your pet’s treatment history at claim time.

What is my pet covered for?

What's covered with RACV Pet Insurance?

We offer pet insurance that covers up to 80% of approved vet costs for any accidental injury or illness up to an annual limit of $12,000.

For example, if your approved vet costs come to $1,000, you can claim 80% on these costs. This equals $800 less any relevant excess. If for example, your excess is $100 we will pay you $700 and you will still have $11,300 of your annual limit available for any future claims in the period of insurance.

We can even consider a waiver on the exclusion for your pet’s pre-existing condition if your pet has been free from their injury or illness for 18 months.

We know it’s important to give your pet the best protection, that’s why you have the option to include our Tender Loving Care (TLC) package. You’ll get up to $100 annually to spend on preventative treatments like:

  • Teeth cleaning
  • Prescription food
  • Annual vaccinations
  • Heartworm prevention
  • Microchipping, de-sexing, and more

What is an illness?

A sickness or disease that your pet gets which reduces their health or standard of living.

What is covered under injury?

An injury to your pet caused solely and directly from an accident, not including gradual deterioration damage which occurs over time.

Is routine care covered?

RACV offers the option to include our Tender Loving Care (TLC) package. TLC provides $100 of cover annually to spend on preventative treatments like:

  • Teeth cleaning
  • Prescription food
  • Vaccinations
  • Heartworm medication
  • Pet registration fees
  • Microchipping
  • De-sexing, and more

No excess applies to this cover.

Are ongoing conditions covered for the life of the pet?

Yes. If we accept your claim and you renew your policy annually, we will continue to cover up to 80% of any eligible vet costs for continuing treatment of that injury or illness. This is restricted to the annual policy limit and less any applicable excess.

Managing your claims

How do I make a claim?

Claiming with RACV is easy. Call us on 1800 319 498 and your claim will be lodged immediately.

  • Include your pet’s treatment history from your vet (your pet’s full veterinary history will be required for your first claim)
  • Provide copies of your paid invoices

How soon can I use my pet's policy?

You can use your policy from the policy start date. You can claim for an injury that occurred on or after the start date and time of your policy.

There is a 30-day waiting period on claims for illness, and a 6 month waiting period applies for cruciate ligament injuries and conditions.

Can I vary my excess?

Your basic excess is the amount you pay towards your claim. It may only apply to certain claims and situations.

You can choose the excess that’s right for you when you set up your policy or at renewal. You can reduce your premium with a higher excess but remember the excess is what you pay each time you make a claim.

If you make more than one claim for the same illness or injury during the period of insurance, then your excess only applies to your first claim.

Are there any limits to the things I can claim for?

There is an annual limit of $12,000 for illness or injury, less any relevant excess.

We also cover emergency boarding costs for your pet up to $1,000 if, for example, you are admitted to a hospital unexpectedly. We pay this benefit on top of your ‘Illness and injury cover’.

You can add our optional 'Tender Loving Care' benefit (TLC) and receive $100 towards preventative treatments such as annual vaccinations.
