An extra starting point has been added to the 2017 RACV Great Australian Rally as a nod to a famous veteran car run.
Many old-timers from the Veteran Car Club of Australia will start the rally, on Sunday 5 February, from Brighton in Melbourne, in honour of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which first took place in 1896.
“We’ll be waved off from Park Street in Brighton at 9am and head up the main shopping street,” says rally organiser Colin Brown.
These veterans, along with many vintage and classics cars and other vehicles starting from St Kilda Rd and Hastings Marina, will converge on Mornington Racecourse.
“It is one of the biggest classic car events in Australia now,” Colin Brown says. “We get pretty close to 1000 cars taking part.”
The RACV Great Australian Rally is a major fundraiser for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. In 20 years it’s raised more than $800,000.
The money comes from the $30 entry fee to drive in the rally and the $10 admission fee to see all the cars at Mornington Racecourse.
“The people who come along can see very old Rolls-Royces, T-Model Ford and a range of other classic cars,” Colin says. “It’s a great day out.”
