Before leaving your home for a holiday, prepare your house, car and social media to ensure a stress-free time.

Taking a selfie on holidays

Social smarts

Are you a social over-sharer? Even the most security-conscious can leave a door open to burglars by making their absence obvious on social media through posts, photos and check-ins.

Five minutes is all it takes to update the privacy settings on your social media accounts to ensure that your holiday details are visible only to friends.

If you need to tell someone your home address, do it privately.

Nothing is more important than the safety of you, your family and your property.

Home security system

Home security

Of course you’ll lock your doors and windows before you leave, but for greater peace of mind, make your place look like it’s occupied by asking a friend or neighbour to clear the letterbox and put your bins out and back in.

Better still, get yourself a live-in carer. In this age of the never-empty nest, 20-something nieces, nephews and neighbours’ kids should be lining up to nurture your tomatoes, and their sense of independence.

If you would like to feel extra safe you can always talk to RACV about a security system for your home. Go to racv.com.au/homesecurity or call 13 27 56.

Checking the oil in a car

Car care

If you’re hitting the road and your car’s due for a service, get it done now. Before you leave, check the oil, water, tyres, automatic transmission fluid and lights.

If your tyres aren’t up to the job, RACV Mobile Tyres will come to your home or workplace to replace them if you’re in the Melbourne metro or some regional areas.

If your battery is getting on or you’ve had trouble starting your car, have it checked. RACV Batteries can check your battery’s charging rate and fluid levels, and replace it if needed, and they’ll come to you if you’re in greater Melbourne. Go to racv.com.au/batteries or call 13 11 11.

RACV is there for you 24/7 whenever you're in need of help out on the road. We're always just a phone call away.

Checking a map

On the road

Before you set out, make sure your Emergency Roadside Assistance is up to date so RACV can help with lockouts, empty tanks, tyre troubles, flat batteries or any other roadside situations you may find yourself in.

Maps and guidebooks are a godsend when you’re out of phone range or want that wider perspective. Stock up at an RACV Shop, and pick up a first aid kit  while you’re there.

As always, drive to the conditions, take delays in stride and tune your radio to local networks for weather warnings and safety alerts.
