Whether it’s spilling your coffee over your laptop or the kids breaking a window with a ball, accidental damage cover is an optional extra to consider as part of your home insurance
Why choose RACV Home Insurance?
In Victoria, RACV Home Insurance is a trusted and popular choice - and for good reason. Let’s take a closer look at what makes RACV stand out and why so many homeowners choose it to protect their most valuable asset.
Why buy home insurance?
For many Australians, their home is their biggest asset, with home insurance regarded as the best way to safeguard this significant financial investment. As well as holding substantial personal and emotional value, the equity built up in a home over time can be a crucial part of an individual's or household’s overall wealth and financial planning.
It's not suprising then that homeowners are keen to find the best home insurance policy to suit their needs. Factors to consider before buying a home insurance policy include coverage types, and the reputation of the insurer.
What does home insurance cover?
Home insurance can help provide financial protection against unexpected events such as fire, storms, flood*, and theft, which could damage your home and/or belongings. An insurance policy covers listed events, and these can be found, along with exclusions and limits, in the Product Disclosure Statement. Here is an overview of the perils covered in many standard policies. What's included depends on your insurer and your policy, so it advisable to check to make sure you're covered.
House fires
Fires can happen anywhere, including at home. Each year there are 3,000 house fires in Victoria according to the Country Fire Authority (CFA), most of which could be avoided. Kitchens are one of the most common locations for fires to start in the home, and lithium-ion batteries cause almost one fire every day in Victoria.
Bushfires
Everyone in Victoria who lives near dense forest, bush, grassland or the coast needs to prepare their property for bushfire, according to the Country Fire Authority (CFA). Bushfire season generally spans from late spring through summer and into early autumn, but it's prudent to be prepared year-round.
Storms
Every year storms cost Victorians around $28 million in damage and account for about 80 per cent of all Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) callouts. During the 2023-2024 financial year alone, Victoria experienced two catastrophic storm events, including the Valentine's Day storms that resulted in more than 27,000 insurance claims - with an average claim amount of $8,000.
Floods
One in 10 Australian homes has some level of flood risk. Storms and flash flooding occur throughout the year in Victoria, and it's important to be prepared. Flooding can threaten your home, with causes including riverine flooding, flash flooding, dam failure and storm surge, according to the Victorian State Emergency Service.
Burglary and theft
Home burglaries in Victoria rose by 13.9 per cent to 30,545 cases in the year to June 2025, according to CSA data. Commonly stolen items included cash, documents, personal belongings, electrical appliances, and power tools, with jewellery losses totalling $29.3 million. Car keys were also a top target. Most burglars entered through doors or windows, underscoring the need to secure your home.
Is home insurance mandatory in Victoria?
While home insurance isn't legally required in Victoria, many mortgage lenders (home loan providers) will require it. It also helps provide you with peace of mind should an adverse event happen to your property.

Finding the right home insurance policy to suit your needs
Which RACV home insurance policy is right for me?
Home Building Insurance
Building insurance provides cover for your house itself, plus home improvements like a garage, carport or in-ground pool. It also covers fixtures or items permanently attached to your home, such as light fixtures, kitchen cupboards, floating floorboards or built-in wardrobes.
Home Contents Insurance
Contents insurance provides cover for items that you own that aren’t permanently attached or fixed to the structure of your house. It may be useful to keep proof of ownership and value for your items, like a receipt, valuation or photograph.
Home Building and Contents Insurance
Combined home buildings and contents insurance offers cover for both the above. Check whether you can get a discount for combining your cover.
Landlord Insurance
Landlords may wish to purchase landlord insurance to cover their investment property for insured events like fire, flood* and storm, plus certain tenant-related incidents. Just like homeowners, landlords can choose from building, contents (that is, cover for furniture and furnishings provided to tenants) or combined cover for their investment property.
Renters Insurance
Renters can consider getting renters Insurance, which provides cover for items that they own and that they keep in or around their home. For example, RACV Renters Insurance can help you cover the cost of repairing or replacing your belongings, including appliances, electronics, furniture and clothing, if they’re lost or damaged in an insured event.
