The new 2026 Nissan Navara ute has close ties to the Mitsubishi Triton but offers fresh looks and a unique Aussie suspension tune. Here’s the vital local spec and what to expect with the incoming D27 Navara 4x4 dual cab.

The new-generation 2026 Nissan Navara has made its global debut in Australia ahead of its arrival in dealerships in March.

The new D27 Navara is based on the Mitsubishi Triton but will offer locally tuned suspension across a heavily rationalised line-up compared to the outgoing D23 Navara, with no single or extra cab variants, no cab chassis and no manual transmission or 4x2 driveline option.

That will leave Navara as a dual-cab 4x4 pick-up only that will be offered in multiple grades, including the volume-selling ST-X and high-series Pro-4X, while a flagship Pro-4X Warrior is set to follow later in 2026.

The shift to Triton’s underpinnings, its bigger dimensions, diesel engine and its safety and tech suite bring notable improvements to the Nissan Navara compared to the outgoing generation. But is there enough here to boost its fortunes in Australia against the incoming new-generation Toyota HiLux, the top-selling Ford Ranger and other rivals including the BYD Shark 6, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, GWM Cannon Ute, the new Kia Tasman and, not least of all, the Mitsubishi Triton?

Ahead of its launch, here’s the essential 2026 Nissan Navara specification guide – including design, size, diesel power, economy, payload, towing capacity, off-road features, safety, tech features and more.

When does the 2026 Nissan Navara go on sale in Australia?

The new Nissan Navara made its global debut in Adelaide recently ahead of its arrival in Australian showrooms at the end of the first quarter of 2026. First deliveries to customers are expected during March 2026.

It follows the closely related Mitsubishi Triton, which landed in dealerships in February 2024. A near-production new 2026 Nissan Navara Pro-4X Warrior concept was also unveiled at the global launch next the mainstream range, again developed in collaboration with local design and engineering firm Premcar and expected on sale later next year.

How much does the new Nissan Navara cost?

The full model range and pricing for the 2026 Nissan Navara are still to be revealed, with just the high-grade ST-X and Pro-4X confirmed for now, but the range will be pared back to just 4x4 dual-cab pick-up models (auto-equipped) and all variants will be competitive on RRP with equivalent models from rival brands, including the related Mitsubishi Triton.

As a guide, the Mitsubishi Triton 4x4 dual-cab auto-equipped pick-up opens at $51,440 plus on-road costs for the entry-level GLX before moving up through four other permanent model grades: GLX+ (from $53,790), GLX-R ($57,240), GLS ($59,840) and GSR ($64,590). These are similar prices to the current D23 Navara, so Nissan Australia will have its work cut out holding firm with the new-generation D27 series.

As well as ST-X and Pro-4X, expect a return of the base-level Navara SL (currently priced from $50,728) and second-tier Navara ST, plus equipment packs built into the core range that bundle high-grade options such as leather trim, heated seats and sunroof.

The new Navara will come under the ‘Nissan More’ ownership program, which includes five years’ capped priced servicing and an extended conditional warranty up to a maximum 10 years/300,000km when servicing with an authorised Nissan dealer. The standard warranty is five years/unlimited kilometres.

2026 Nissan Navara design and specification

As well as using the same ladder-frame chassis as the Mitsubishi Triton, the 2026 Nissan Navara shares exterior components such as the bonnet, doors, roof and tub. That leaves the front face as the main point of visual differentiation, and it’s here where Nissan designers have made some clear inroads.

Drawing on past Navara utes and off-road wagons, the team led by Nissan Motor Corporation’s senior design director, Ken Lee, has developed a bull bar-inspired V-strut grille. Above the grille, the three-slot design is said to pay tribute to the D21 Navara, while the C-shaped headlights ‘clamp’ onto the grille surround in similar fashion to other Nissan large off-roaders.

Size-wise, the new D27 Navara is slightly bigger than the outgoing D23 and, as you’d expect, is almost identical to the Triton, with the same 5320mm overall length, 3130mm wheelbase, 1865mm width (excluding side mirrors, although some Navara variants extend to 1930mm) and 1795mm height (though select Triton models are up to 1815mm).

The five-seater dual cab is roomier than the outgoing version, with Nissan claiming 29mm more front shoulder room and, in the rear, a sizeable 42mm extra legroom.

At the top of the range, the Pro-4X has unique interior features such as ‘lava red’ inserts on its leather-accented seats, as well as embossed logos and contrast stitching. Red accents are also found on the flagship model’s exterior, contrasting with a black sports bar and black 17-inch wheels with 265/65-series all-terrain tyres.

The new Navara’s cargo bed measures 1555mm long, 1545mm wide and 525mm high. Width between the wheel arches is 1135mm – a fraction wider than the current model but still not enough to hold an Australian pallet (1165x1165mm) – while the tailgate opening width remains 1360mm.

Underneath, the D27 Navara reverts to a traditional leaf-sprung rigid-axle rear suspension that was controversially ditched a decade ago with the D23 series for an independent five-link coil-sprung design, which required upgrading several times to improve load handling and ride comfort.

In concert with the high-mounted double-wishbone front suspension (with coil springs and stabiliser bar), the Navara’s leaf-sprung rear end has received tuning from Australia’s Premcar – the Victorian-based engineering and design firm behind the off-road-focused Nissan Navara Warrior and Patrol Warrior – with all grades benefiting from new Australian-made Monroe dampers fitted front and rear. Nissan claims the result is a “compliant and comfortable ride, both unladen and fully loaded”.

As with Triton, a heavy-duty four-leaf rear suspension should be available on workhorse-oriented entry model/s, leaving a three-leaf design for Navara variants aimed at recreational buyers.

What powers the new Nissan Navara?

As found in the Mitsubishi Triton, the 2026 Nissan Navara is powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder twin-turbocharged diesel engine that produces 150kW of power at 3500rpm and 470Nm of torque at 1500rpm.

It is paired exclusively with a wide-ratio six-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive system – either part-time or permanent 4WD, depending on the model grade (see the off-road section below). The engine requires AdBlue to be added to reduce emissions, with the AdBlue tank holding 17 litres. The diesel tank capacity is 75L.

Nissan quotes an official claimed fuel consumption figure of 7.7L/100km on the combined cycle – down from 7.9L/100km in the current lower-output 140kW/450Nm 2.4-litre diesel.

According to Nissan, the switch to an electric power steering system (from a power-assisted rack-and-pinion design) also helps improve fuel economy.

What is the towing capacity and payload of new Nissan Navara?

As with the outgoing D23 series, the D27 2026 Nissan Navara has a 3500kg maximum braked towing capacity, reducing to 750kg without trailer brakes. Maximum tow ball download is 350kg.

A tow bar is fitted standard on the flagship Pro-4X, but specific details for other model grades are still to be announced.

Payload for the double-cab 4x4 pick-up ranges from 950kg to 1047kg, depending on the variant. Gross combined mass (GCM) is 6250kg and gross vehicle mass (GVM) is 3190kg, while kerb weight is between 2120-2140kg, again depending on the model grade.

Axle capacity for the new Navara is 1580kg front and 2040kg rear, the latter a vast improvement over the current 1850kg and reflecting the switch back to a traditional leaf-sprung rear suspension from the D23’s coil-sprung rear end which underwent several upgrades to improve its towing and load hauling performance. The maximum roof load on the new Navara is 80kg.

Is the 2026 Nissan Navara better off-road?

The 2026 Nissan Navara inherits two different four-wheel drive systems from the Mitsubishi Triton – a conventional part-time ‘Easy 4WD’ system for entry models (eg. SL and ST) and ‘Super 4WD’ (ST-X and Pro-4X) with permanent 4WD.

These equate to the ‘Easy Select’ and ‘Super Select II’ systems found in the Triton. Easy Select offers two-wheel drive/RWD (2H) on paved surfaces and, with the centre diff lock engaged, four-wheel drive in high (4H) and low range (4L). Super 4WD features a Torsen limited-slip centre differential that splits drive torque between the front and rear axles and allows full-time four-wheel drive operation.

All Navara models have a rear differential lock to assist with traction in off-road conditions.

As well as offering Super 4WD, the ST-X and Pro-4X have seven driver-selectable terrain modes – Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock. Nissan says the off-road traction aids work in conjunction with the locally revised suspension system “to provide superior handling and control across all surfaces”.

Off-road equipment and heavy-duty body protection measures will be included among the range of genuine accessories for the new Navara, along with other items such as cargo management systems.

Compared to the current D23 Navara ST-X dual cab, the new D27 has a slightly higher ground clearance but lower approach angle and higher departure angle. Key off-road specs are as follows:

  • Ground clearance unladen – 228mm (+4mm)
  • Front overhang – 890mm (+5mm)
  • Rear overhang – 1300mm (+75mm)
  • Approach angle – 30.4 degrees (-2.3 degrees)
  • Departure angle – 22.8 degrees (+2.5 degrees)
  • Ramp breakover angle – 23.4 degrees (+0.2 degrees)

The off-road-focused 2026 Nissan Navara Warrior concept shown alongside the new Navara features several “proposed modifications” that build on the new Pro-4X model grade, including:

  • Lifted suspension with front coil springs and dampers finished in lava red
  • Wider track via aftermarket 17-inch wheels
  • 32.2-inch all-terrain tyres
  • Suspension tuning optimised for both loaded and unloaded conditions
  • Redesigned front-end with steel bull bar and integrated fender flare extensions
  • Unique light bezel with lava red design feature
  • Aftermarket driving lights (lava red accents)
  • Multi-stage underbody bash plate (lava red finish)

What safety and technology features on the new Nissan Navara?

The 2026 Nissan Navara is fitted standard with eight airbags and a broad range of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). These include:

  • LED headlights and tail-lights
  • High beam assist
  • 360-degree surround view monitor
  • Adaptive cruise control (higher grades)
  • Driver attention and fatigue monitoring
  • Blind spot warning with lane change assist
  • Lane departure warning with emergency lane assist
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Intelligent speed limiter
  • Autonomous emergency braking with cyclist/pedestrian detection and junction assist
  • Front and rear cross traffic alert

The new Nissan Navara has received a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating for all variants built from July 2025, based on testing conducted in 2024 for the closely related Mitsubishi Triton. As with Triton, the new Navara has ventilated front disc brakes but relies on drum brakes at the rear.

Importantly, the Navara will offer automatic collision notification with emergency call button (eCall) in the event of a crash. This comes under the connected car services suite offered on the new Navara, which also includes stolen vehicle tracking and remote operations like door lock/unlock and air-conditioning/heater control.

It’s the headline act in an improved tech offering on Navara, which includes a 7.0-inch digital dash display for the driver (in between conventional gauges) and a 9.0-inch central infotainment touchscreen with DAB digital radio, Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity and USB-A and USB-C ports.

The ST-X and Pro-4X also have a wireless smartphone charging pad in the lower dash stack area.
