The Geely EX2 is confirmed for sale in Australia and could undercut the BYD Atto 1 to become the cheapest EV in 2026. Here’s what to expect from the new compact electric hatch.

The Geely EX2 will launch in 2026 to challenge the BYD Atto 1 for the title of cheapest EV in Australia.

Geely’s new compact electric hatchback has fast become the biggest-selling vehicle outright in China in 2025, attracting more than 400,000 sales in the 12 months since its late-2024 launch.

Australia is an altogether different proposition, but if the EX2 can undercut the Atto 1, now on sale for $23,990 plus on-road costs, Geely’s new entry-level car could win strong support in our market.

At that price, what can we expect from the 2026 Geely EX2? Here are the vital specs, features, range details and more found in key overseas markets, including those with right-hand drive, to provide a comparison with the BYD Atto 1 and the best guide for Australian buyers ahead of the Geely EX2 launch.

When does the Geely EX2 go on sale in Australia?

Geely Auto has confirmed the Geely EX2 electric car will go on sale in Australia in the second half of 2026.

The five-seater city car will join the battery-electric Geely EX5 and plug-in hybrid Geely Starray medium SUVs in Australia as the Chinese auto giant – which is better known as the parent company of global brands such as Volvo, Polestar and Lotus – builds a portfolio of at least six model lines in the next couple of years and strives to become one of the top 10 brands outright.

How much will the 2026 Geely EX2 cost?

Pricing for the 2026 Geely EX2 in Australia will hinge on powertrain specification but the highly competitive landscape will ensure the electric hatch is priced close to, if not below, rival EVs including the 2026 BYD Atto 1 – the cheapest new electric car available at $23,990 plus on-road costs ($26,446.90 drive-away for Victorian private buyers).

The next cheapest EVs are slightly larger hatchbacks and small SUVs that start above $30,000 – the BYD Dolphin hatch (from $32,698.90 drive-away), BYD Atto 2 small SUV (from $34,207.70 d/a), GWM Ora hatch (from $35,990 d/a) and MG4 hatch (from $37,990 d/a). It will also line up against the incoming 2026 Honda Super-One.

Geely Auto Australia said model grades, local specs and pricing details will be provided “in due course” but that the EX2 reaffirmed its commitment to “making innovative, new energy mobility accessible to a wide range of buyers as the brand’s entry model”.

2026 Geely EX2 design and specification

Like the BYD Atto 1, the 2026 Geely EX2 is a compact city car but does offer five seats where the Atto 1 is a four-seater only.

Based on the Chinese carmaker’s GEA modular platform, which also underpins the Geely EX5 and Starray EM-i, the EX2 is bigger than the Atto 1 at 4135mm long (+145mm) and 1805mm wide (+85mm), though not quite as tall at 1580mm for overall height (-10mm). It rests on a longer 2650mm wheelbase (+150mm), which should bring an advantage with interior space.

Known as the Geome Xingyuan (apparently translating to Star Wish) in overseas markets, the 2026 Geely EX2 hatch has a rounded, soft-edged design not dissimilar to the GWM Ora and uses celestial cues like a constellation carved into its rear pillar trim. Geely also points to the ‘smile face’ up front and clean body lines across the car, in contrast to more heavily sculpted and sharply angled EVs from rival brands.

For export markets, the EX2 has LED headlights and tail-lights, the former in a feather-inspired design that includes adaptive high beams that Geely says can illuminate the road up to 170 metres ahead and 11 metres either side of the vehicle (up to 22m). Dusk-sensing and follow-me-home lighting features are also noted.

Wheel sizes range from 15-inch steel rims (with 205/65 tyres) at the entry level to 16-inch alloys (205/60 tyres) on the higher grade/s, both with an aerodynamic four-leaf clover design. A sportier version with 17-inch black double-arm quad-spoke alloys (225/50 tyres) and bright orange brake callipers also appeared at the recent Thailand motor show.

The suspension comprises MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link configuration at the rear, supported by disc brakes at each end (ventilated front/solid rear), electric power steering and an electronic park brake. The turning circle is a tight 9.9m.

The exterior has two-tone options (with a black roof) across a colour palette including pink, blue, beige, white, silver, grey and pistachio tones. The interior is also available with ivory white trim as an upgrade from the standard dark grey.

The EX2 cabin looks to be roomy for such a compact EV, combining practical elements with plenty of tech, creature comforts and quirky elements such as city skyline graphics in the dashboard and door trim lit by a 258-colour ‘urban starlight’ ambient interior lighting system.

On the practical side, Geely says the EX2 has a fully flat cabin floor and 36 storage compartments throughout. These include a large 10-litre drawer instead of a traditional glovebox up front, 20L front console storage (including generous twin cup holders and a lower area under the console bridge), another couple of handy drawers under the rear seats (holding 28L), a 70-litre front trunk and, at the rear, a 375L cargo area that expands to 1320L when the 60/40-split folding rear seats are lowered.

What is the range of the Geely EX2?

The 2026 Geely EX2 has a single electric motor that drives the rear wheels and draws energy from a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) EV battery.

In key overseas markets, including right-hand drive, the permanent magnet synchronous motor produces 85kW of power and 150Nm of torque. With the EX2 tipping the scales at 1300kg, the EV can accelerate from 0-100km/h in an unremarkable 10-11.5 seconds, depending on the grade.

With a 40.8kWh LFP battery, the EX2 has a claimed driving range of 395km, based on the NEDC standard. Energy consumption is rated at 11.8kWh/100km (NEDC).

In China, a smaller 58kW electric motor and 30.1kWh LFP battery is available, offering a range up to 310km on the more lenient CLTC test cycle – 32 per cent less than the 40kWh battery option (410km CLTC). This is sure to be under consideration for Australia given the price-leading BYD Atto 1 offers a 65kW e-motor/30kWh battery on the entry-level front-drive Atto 1 Essential, rising to 115kW e-motor/43kWh battery on the Atto 1 Premium.

The Atto 1’s 30kWh battery has a 220km range using the more stringent WLTP standard, rising to 310km with the 43kWh battery (WLTP) – equivalent to about 270/380km (CLTC) respectively, so the EX2 looks to have the edge over Atto 1 for driving range.

The EX2 can handle AC charging up to 6.6kW and DC fast-charging up to 50kW. With AC charging at that maximum rate, Geely says the EV needs 6.5 hours to replenish the 40.8kWh battery from 10 to 100 per cent, while DC supply at 50kW can charge the power pack from 30-80% in a claimed 25 minutes.

Eco, Comfort and Sport driving modes are provided and Vehicle to Load (V2L) functionality is built in to enable charging of small external appliances, such as a laptop or portable coffee machine.

What safety and technology features on Geely EX2?

Australian calibration of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) will be crucial for the incoming 2026 Geely EX2, not least because the electric city car will be fitted with a wide range of active safety systems including:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Front and rear collision warning
  • Lane departure warning, lane change assist
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Blind spot detection
  • Front vehicle departure warning
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Door open warning

All variants will be fitted with a reversing camera but the range-topping version is expected to have a 360-degree surround-view camera with extra support from a ‘transparent chassis’ (providing views underneath the car).

The broader tech suite will include standard fitment of a 14.6-inch high-definition centre touchscreen with Flyme Auto operating system. USB-A and USB-C ports are included (with one port in the rear seat compartment) and a wireless phone charging pad will be offered on high-grade variants at least. An 8.8-inch instrument display sits in front of the driver.

Connected services are also available in the EX2, providing remote vehicle access and over-the-air (OTA) software updates, but full Australian capabilities – including automatic emergency call notification (eCall) – are still to be confirmed.
