Tips for skiing and snowboarding holidays

A great ski holiday comes down to preparation. A few basics can make all the difference between a great run and a costly one.

Frequently asked questions

Most standard travel insurance policies don't cover snow sports automatically, because skiing, snowboarding and similar activities are treated as high-risk by insurers.

To help protect your ski trip, you usually need to add a winter sports or snow sports cover option to your policy. With RACV Travel Insurance, you can add Ski & Winter Sports Cover at the quote stage to include this protection. Without the add-on, claims related to snow-based activities likely won't be covered.

Comprehensive travel insurance with snow sports cover is strongly recommended for any ski or snowboard trip. Skiing and snowboarding are classed as high-risk activities, which means standard travel insurance typically excludes injuries that happen on the slopes, along with other events that can make a ski holiday costly, such as severe weather and avalanches.

RACV Ski & Winter Sports Cover includes:

  • Overseas medical bills and emergency evacuation.
  • Equipment hire costs to replace damaged or stolen ski and snow gear.
  • Cover for lift passes that have been lost or stolen.
  • Additional accommodation if bad weather or an avalanche keeps you on the mountain.
  • Reimbursement for lift passes or transport to a nearby resort if the slopes are closed (only on International Comprehensive and Essentials policies).

When you’re looking into snow sports insurance, you should make sure that your cover includes:

  • Overseas medical bills and emergency evacuation
  • Replacement or hire of lost or damaged ski and snowboarding equipment
  • Compensation for lost or stolen lift passes
  • Reimbursement for costs related to bad weather and piste closure.

It's also worth checking whether off-piste skiing is included as most insurers only cover it if you're with a professional guide. Read the policy wording carefully to compare inclusions, exclusions and limits across providers.

Ski & Winter Sports Cover can be added to most RACV Travel Insurance policies:

  • International Comprehensive and Essentials
  • All Domestic policies
  • Annual Multi-Trip

Single Trip plans cover one-off international or domestic holidays to the snow. Annual Multi-Trip provides continuous cover for 12 months – ideal if you're hitting the slopes more than once a season.

Bad weather and avalanches can disrupt travel plans at either end of a ski trip, affecting flights, transfers and connections to and from the resort.

If your pre-booked outward or return trip is delayed by more than 12 hours due to an avalanche or bad weather, RACV's Ski and Winter Sports add-on covers you for reasonable additional accommodation, meal and travel expenses incurred as a result of that delay.

Note that cover only applies to travel to and from the resort. You won’t be covered for losses if an avalanche or bad weather disrupts your ski plans while you’re on the mountain. Refer to the combined PDS/FSG for specific inclusions, limits and exclusions.

* RACV Member discount applies to the premium only (not applicable taxes).

^ ‘Unlimited’ means there is no cap on the maximum dollar amount which may be paid out for this benefit, noting that how much is payable for a benefit depends on the specific cover in the relevant section of the Policy Wording and any applicable exclusions. Medical, hospital, dental or any ancillary benefits or expenses incurred more than 12 months from the time treatment for the injury or illness was first received will not be covered. Terms, conditions (including eligibility criteria), limits, sub-limits and exclusions apply. Refer to combined PDS/FSG for full details.

## These limits are per policy.

++ Dependant means any of your children, stepchildren, foster children or grandchildren who are 25 years of age or under at the time you purchase your policy, financially dependent on their parents or grandparents, not working full time, travelling with you for your entire trip and listed on the Certificate of Insurance as your Dependant. Dependants can be covered at no extra cost if they have not disclosed any medical conditions requiring assessment. Terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits apply. Refer to PDS for full details.
