Which RACV Travel Insurance plan should you consider for your Aussie trip?

For bigger trips, the RACV Domestic plan includes cancellation fees and lost deposits, with your choice of limit, alongside cover for lost or damaged luggage, emergency expenses and legal liability. If you want to keep things simple, the Domestic Cancellation plan includes cancellation fees and lost deposits up to $1,000, without cover for luggage or other benefits.

If you have a simple itinerary and you're not anticipating any dramas while you’re away, the Domestic Cancellation plan includes cancellation fees and lost deposits up to $1,000.

If you’re renting a car for your getaway, the Rental Car Excess plan can help cover any excess charged by your hire car company for damage to the vehicle, with a choice of limit from $1,000 to $8,000. The Domestic plan also includes rental car excess of $5,000##, alongside cancellation fees, lost or delayed luggage, rental car excess, emergency expenses and more.

Cover for snow sports is only available as an optional add-on to the Domestic plan. The Ski and Winter Sports add-on includes benefits for lost or stolen ski equipment, ski pack reimbursement, lost lift passes and bad weather and avalanche delays. As with all domestic cover, medical and hospital expenses aren't included as these are covered by Medicare within Australia.

Australian ocean cruises aren’t covered by Domestic Travel Insurance. However, you can still get cover for your cruise by choosing an RACV International Travel Insurance plan and selecting ‘Australian Cruise’ when asked to list the countries you’ll be visiting. Select Cruise Benefits from the list of add-ons and you’ll only pay for the days you’re cruising.**

Cruise Benefits includes onboard medical cover, cabin confinement, missed ports, shore excursions and marine rescue diversion. Note that Medicare won’t cover onboard medical treatment, even if you’re in Australian waters, so ensure you have the appropriate level of cover in place.

River cruises are automatically covered by Domestic travel insurance plans.ǂǂ

Frequently asked questions

Domestic travel insurance typically includes cover for:

  • cancellation fees and lost deposits
  • luggage and personal money
  • emergency expenses
  • legal liability
  • rental car excess

It doesn't include medical or hospital expenses, since these are covered under Medicare within Australia.

RACV Travel Insurance offers three options for trips in Australia – Domestic, Domestic Cancellation and Rental Car Excess – each with different benefits and limits, along with optional cover for snow sports and cruise holidays on the Domestic plan.

No. Domestic travel insurance doesn't include cover for medical or hospital expenses, as these costs are already covered under Medicare for Australian residents travelling within Australia.

Domestic policies are designed to cover other travel-related costs instead, such as cancellation fees, luggage and rental car excess.

Note that ambulance costs and private hospital care aren't included under Medicare, so cover for these will depend on individual health insurance arrangements.

It depends on whether you're taking a river or ocean cruise.

  • River cruises: domestic river cruises are automatically included in your policy at no extra cost.ǂǂ
  • Ocean cruises: if your cruise is spending more than one night on the ocean, you need the optional Cruise Benefits add-on, which can be selected at the time of purchase.**
  • Open water sailing: no cover available for small boat sailing that takes place more than 12 nautical miles from any landmass.

When the Cruise Benefits add-on is included**, RACV Travel Insurance provides additional cover for cabin confinement, missed ports, onboard medical, emergency evacuation, missed shore excursions and marine rescue diversions. Note that Cruise Benefits aren’t available on RACV Domestic Travel Insurance - you’ll need to select ‘Australian Cruise’ as your destination when getting a quote and then choose from one of the RACV International Travel Insurance plans.

Refer to the Cruise Travel Insurance page for more detail.

The RACV Domestic plan offers a choice of $0 or $100 excess, selected at the time of purchase and shown on the Certificate of Insurance. A lower excess generally means a higher premium, while a higher excess reduces the premium.†

Excess applies per insured event, so it's deducted from each individual claim rather than once per policy.

The RACV Travel Insurance Annual Multi-Trip policy covers an unlimited number of trips over 12 months, including both international and domestic trips more than 250km from home, with your choice of a maximum trip duration of 30, 45 or 60 days.

As with other domestic plans, the domestic portion of an Annual Multi-Trip policy doesn't include medical, hospital, dental or evacuation cover, since these costs are covered under Medicare within Australia.

Useful factors to consider when it comes to RACV Domestic Travel Insurance include:

  • Cancellation limits and whether they're a fixed amount or a choice of limit.
  • What's included under luggage and personal money and any sub-limits on individual items.
  • Excess options and how a lower or higher excess affects the premium.
  • Whether rental car excess is included and up to what amount.
  • Availability of optional add-ons, such as snow sports for skiing holidays.

Comparing these factors can help you decide what level of cover lines up with a specific trip.  Refer to the combined PDS/FSG for more details. RACV Members save 15% on every policy*.

++ Dependant means any of your children, stepchildren, foster children or grandchildren who are 25 years of age or under at the time you purchase your policy, financially dependent on their parents or grandparents, not working full time, travelling with you for your entire trip and listed on the Certificate of Insurance as your Dependant. Dependants can be covered at no extra cost if they have not disclosed any medical conditions requiring assessment. Terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits apply. Refer to the PDS for full details.

† Some cover benefit limits or sub-limits may be less than your chosen excess and therefore the insurer may not contribute anything to your claim.
